Theoretically, I’m moving. I currently live in the Midlands (suburb/city based) but am looking to uproot with DD(5) and start up somewhere nice.

Areas I am familiar with and would love are Derbyshire Dales/Peak District, however I’d love to hear of other areas that are similar. I’m looking for stone cottages, small villages, plenty of nature - a forest heavy or seaside area would be lovely.

This may not happen, but please help me with location ideas!

I was going to say Tynemouth but it's not really little stone cottagey. We liked Matlock Bath and Bakewell but it has recently been mentioned on the creepy places thread so...

Lancaster? Or closer to the lakes?

MissyB1 · 03/07/2025 18:23

Herefordshire, Worcestershire (no seaside in either of those obviously).

Devon or Dorset would fit chocolate box cottages and seaside, also parts of Somerset.

Parts of Calderdale
Some of the villages around Hamsterley Forest
Ross-on-Wye/Forest of Dean

Try looking at UpAvon for very rural, or if you like market towns, Devizes.

Forest of Dean is beautiful, underrated and very welcoming.

Thanks everyone! I’ll make a start with all of your suggestions!

New Forest - forest and sea, but expensive!

I may need a link to the creepy places thread, that’s right up my street!!

I live in Frome in Somerset. It seems it’s quite Marmitey on MN but I really like it. It’s got a real community vibe, plenty of things going on, lots of arty stuff. Today is the start of the annual Frome Festival. It’s the first time I’ve been here for it but it seems it’s like a mini Edinburgh, with lots of music, shows, arts etc. the housing is varied. I’ve just moved from a rented 1990s box to a cosy Victorian terrace.

it has its negatives….public transport is rubbish and it’s not very diverse but on the whole I like it.

North York Moors?

Loads of places that would probably fit the bill in the 'triangle' east of the A19 and north of the A64 towards the coast.
