6 yo won't wear shorts 🥵

6 yo DS refuses to wear shorts, only wants joggers. I've convinced him to be in a light t-shirt and sandals with no socks but it's sweltering. Any ideas for convincing him otherwise?

Leave him to it.

Let him wear what he wants. There are harder battles to fight .

FumingTRex · 30/06/2025 17:22

Could you offer him a selection of shorts in joggers material and see if he likes any?

Would he wear jogger shorts? Or football material shorts?
don’t know your situation, but to me, this is definitely as necessary as suncream unless he wants to sit indoors and do nothing all day.

AuntyBulgaria · 30/06/2025 17:22

I have a 17 year old that refuses not to wear a jumper. It's a battle you won't win!

GonnaeNoDaeThatJustGonnaeNo · 30/06/2025 17:22

My DS has always hated shorts and he’s 17 now.

leave him to it.

LlynTegid · 30/06/2025 17:24

What treat is he looking forward to, link this to that. This could be a way forward, brutal as it may sound.

Help him to overcome the 'I have never done this so I don't want to'. Will be a useful lesson for the future.

Xiaoxiong · 30/06/2025 17:25

This is a "natural consequences" one - if he is hot, he will work out why quite quickly. Or he might not be hot in joggers, some kids don't feel the heat or cold too much!

Reminds me of the newspaper cartoon of two children in the playground. One is in a T-shirt and the other, who is wearing a coat and hat, is saying to the t-shirt kid "I have to wear this coat and hat, my mother is cold" 😂

hexsnidgett · 30/06/2025 17:25

Why do you want him to?

Douane · 30/06/2025 17:25

Leave the shorts on his bed, and leave him to it.

TigerRag · 30/06/2025 17:26

Will he wear 3/4 length trousers?

Willowkins · 30/06/2025 17:28

Just wait till the winter when he refuses to wear anything except shorts. I'm convinced young people experience heat and cold differently to the rest of us.

RightOnTheEdge · 30/06/2025 17:30

My ds12 is always covered up. He wears long shorts and swim top for swimming or on the beach, he always wears joggers and long sleeved tops whatever the weather.
He wears skins under his football top/shorts all year round.

His school let the kids wear their PE shorts and tshirt today because of the weather but he still wore his school trousers, polo shirt and blazer!

I've mostly given up trying to persuade him to wear something cooler, sometimes I can't help commenting, but usually I just leave him too it.

HonestOpalHelper · 30/06/2025 18:02

Man here, I refused shorts as a small child, and have subsequently never worn any - I don't own a pair, and wouldn't wear them - can't abide them, my knees and lower legs are not for general view!

Needmorelego · 30/06/2025 18:10

Just get the shorts made out of jogger material.

MargaretThursday · 30/06/2025 18:12

Ds is 18yo and only really wears shorts unless he can see there is a real need (eg he did for work experience). He's rarely worn trousers since he was a toddler.

Let him wear what is comfortable, but have a pair of shorts for him so if he asks for them you can do that easily. Ds would be at school in shorts in the snow, but I'd make sure he had trousers in his bag if he decided he needed them. he only did once; when the teacher said only those wearing trousers (or tights for the girls in dresses) could go out to play in the snow. He told me he seriously considered asking if he could borrow some tights*

*he had worn tights as an elf in a show and said they were very comfortable.

Exactly this. I was the same as a youngster and my Mum used to nag me like buggery to the point of getting quite worked up. Leave him to wear what he wants, not what someone else thinks he should be. Sorry to be so blunt.

Plain, cuffed, pyjama bottoms are more lightweight than joggers but look the same
