Love my north facing garden.

On here I often read about people who wouldn't dream of buying a house with a north facing back garden.

My house is on an exact north-south axis and in the winter there's no sun at all in the back garden nearest the house. In summer it gets much more sun as the sun is high and also from the west in the afternoon and evening. I've always loved it, can grow lots of different types of plants and I grow the real sun-lovers in my front garden.

But in our increasingly hot summers to have the back of the house and garden nearest the house in shade is a massive bonus, I can sit and eat outside without being roasted alive and don't need to be rigging up shades and parasols, yet I can be in full sun just a bit further down the garden if I choose.

I wonder if shadier gardens will become more of a selling point in the future.

We have a South-facing garden and the only bit of shade is if you sit under a tree in the morning. After that, nothing.

This is absolutely fine most days, but the last few days have been challenging.

I like all of them. I like my east facing garden now, but I used to like my south facing one previously, and sit at the bottom (on a mini terrace) when it was too hot.

NNE Facing rear garden here. I also love it in the summer. There is always a spot in the sun but also plenty of shade when it's hot hot hot. I have lots of sitting areas dotted through the garden, big patio by the house, arbour seat halfway up for the late afternoon and a small seating area at the end of the garden where you get the full sun and the last rays. It can be rather gloomy in the winter but we then sit out in the south facing front garden.

Glorious North facing here too.
Bit of sun, but not too much.

I'm not a sit in the sun all day kind of person though, so it's just perfect for us.

Ours is north west and I love it! There is a front garden with room to sit as well, south facing and pretty warm, so I don't worry much about it affecting any future sale.

When we were buying I was gutted to see the survey stating the garden was north facing as received wisdom is that everyone loves sunny gardens. I now love it. At first we placed garden furniture at the end of the garden to get the summer sun but it was too darn hot.
Now the furniture gets the shade of the house and we can comfortably stay out we'll into the evening.
Its a bugger getting washing dry for half the year though.

I love ours too! The back of the house stays nice and cool and we get sun all day in the summer! We have a bench in our front garden to sit in when it's a sunny day in early spring/late autumn. Friends with west or south facing gardens are roasting atm

My son and his wife fell in love with a house with a north facing back garden and I virtually begged them not to buy it. I’m the first to admit tho that I don’t was wrong! It’s been a boon in the recent London heat, and is giving them some real discipline and reason to be creative in terms of planting.
yep. I’m a convert!

My ex in laws have a south facing garden and at first I was envious - I love the heat. I changed my mind as soon as we spent one summer afternoon out there, even with a massive parasol it was still boiling hot.

I have a north west facing garden and it’s great, the patio area is always in the shade in the afternoon so I don’t need to fuss with a parasol. It is a decent size garden though so there’s always some sun. Feel really lucky!
