5 year old drawings

Hello, my son has Autism, he has just turned 5 and only put pen to paper for the first time 6 months ago! To me, as i'm not used to seeing him draw; are pretty good drawings. But It dawned on me that I don't really know how well most 5 year olds draw, do I have rose-tinted mum-goggles on and they're actually pretty average, bearing in mind he had never held a pen before January! These are all drawn from imagination.
If you know lots of 5 year olds, would this rank as pretty good or somewhere more in the middle? It doesn't matter to me either way, I'm just curious!

Above average - lots of facial detail, each picture shows a distinct scene, plenty of detail (good observation) in the cactus/desert scene, outer space scene great detail too. The details overall show good powers of observation and ability to recreate observed details, and imagination clearly working well.

Treasure these drawings - I recently came upon some drawings my adult DCs did between age 4 and 6 and I'm so glad I kept them.

Has he watched monsters Inc before ? I swear some of those look exactly like the characters from the movie. Amazing if it's all from memory! Really good drawing skills too. My nieces are older than him and no quite there yet with their drawings x

These are 100x better than my 5 year old's drawings, his are terrible 🙈

@dontcomeatme no he hasn’t, but I definitely agree! He’s obsessed with drawing eye balls on everything. I’ve got a drawing he did with about 30 variations of different suns, all with one eyeball on each! I find his drawings really fascinating because a lot of them don’t make any sense but it’s a glimpse into his mind.

I love these! They are expressions of his imagination!

They're really good, op, and definitely above average in my opinion. I have 4 children, and see a lot of their peers artwork through school etc. Considering he's only just started using pens recently, I'm extremely impressed.

Annascaul · 26/06/2025 14:21

They’re really very good, op 😊

I think the eye obsession is an age and autism thing! All the DC I know went through that phase but most outgrew it, except my DNeice who is autistic too! How crazy x they're really good OP 😊

Significantly better than either of mine were at 5 (they’re teenagers and frankly he’d give them a run for their money now, we are not an artistic family!!). What an amazing imagination he has

Radra · 26/06/2025 14:45

I would say well above average but not "obviously a future artist" level.

One of my best friends from primary school is a professional artist and her drawings from very young are just head and shoulders better than any I have ever seen a 5 year old produce.

Your son's are very good but in a more normal way if that makes sense

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 26/06/2025 14:52

Fantastic for his age! Well done DS. 😊

@Radra who knows? Never say never, hes omly just turned 5 and only started using a pencil 6 months ago. Who knows where he will be in 6 more months. Also, remember, being an artist doesnt mean you have to be amazing at copying and accuracy drawings.. artists come in many different forms nowadays.

Sure. What I was trying to say is that they aren't at the "wow obviously this is a future artist level" not that they are "obviously could never be a future artist"

DirtyBird · 26/06/2025 15:21

Honestly I think they are amazing, especially for a 5 year old. The creativity and the well defined characters really is impressive.
