ChatGBT Payment Query

RabbitsRock · 25/06/2025 11:25

DD16 has made a payment through Go Henry, supposedly for a ChatGBT subscription. It’s come up under “ Toys & Gadgets” in the spending section of Go Henry. I clicked on it & it’s an Apple payment. Apple say they need DD’s Apple ID to look into it. Would ChatGBT be through Apple?

My chat gpt subscription is £19.99

Chat GPT

Then it sounds like she’s knowingly or unknowingly paid for a fake version https://metro.co.uk/2023/01/12/unofficial-chatgpt-apps-are-charging-people-to-use-the-free-ai-tool-18086822/amp/

As others have said, it’s more expensive than £9.99 so it sounds like you may not have transferred enough. Why does a 16 year old need a premium AI subscription anyway?

As pp said save your money on gohenry, set up a normal bank account for her and let her manage her own pocket money. Anything you specifically need to pay for pay for yourself instead of transferring if she can’t be trusted, but at 16 she’s going to need to learn money management sooner or later especially if she wants to go to uni at 18.

A flood of unofficial ChatGPT apps are charging people to use the free AI tool

These new apps charge you anything around £9.99 a week for a subscription.

Probably cheating on her homework!

Unfortunately she’s very unlikely to let me look at her phone

Sounds like you have bigger issues around keeping her safe online than just this one subscription then. I presume you bought the phone for her, did you not set it up and put in an email at that point?

RabbitsRock · 25/06/2025 16:20

DD now has a debit card so we can cancel Go Henry

Will phone Apple again as I need to change my E Mail anyway.

The ChatGPT is meant for DD to do past papers etc as she’s been out of school for over 2 years so hasn’t taken her GCSES.

Does the free version not do past papers?

There’s lots of teachers on YouTube who go through GCSE past papers. (Obviously free) As they are human, they are probably easier to understand than ChatGPT and likely to be more accurate.

Do you know that the exam board websites have marking schemes for past papers? If you are Home Educating then they are useful to find out how to mark a test.

Again, I think DD is trying to pull the wool over my eyes. I didn’t even know there was a free version! She will be paying me back the £9.99

I have the iPhone app (free version) and it says that the paid version is £19.99 per month.

Pretty sure other companies do free AI tools too. I would have a play with the other ones like Gemini (Google), Co-pilot (Microsoft) if ChatGPT isn’t doing the job. I don’t use AI much so can’t comment on the best one for secondary school education but my uni age dd tried using it for an assignment and it made up a lot of bullshit and cited fake scientific studies so beware

FortyElephants · 25/06/2025 20:14

You can definitely set up a subscription to ChatGPT through your apple account and it will show as a payment to apple on the statement but it costs £19.99 a month so any £9.99 payment is for something else - probably not a scam, but rather she's paid for some other thing and is lying to you

FortyElephants · 25/06/2025 20:16

Also you wouldn't use ChatGPT to get past papers, you can just google that. You can use ChatGPT to help revise for sure but the free version is fine.
