Has anyone else got this extremely painful sore throat,

Hi,

Has anyone else got this extremely painful sore throat where it feels like you’ve been cut in the throat by razors every time you swallow?

I’ve tried paracetamol and Ibuprofen but it’s just so painful.

DD had it, then DH now it’s my turn …

Anyone else? What helps?

I think it's a common covid presentation now. It will pass.

FacingTheWall · 19/06/2025 21:21

Yes, it’s the new strain of covid. Get one of the local anaesthetic sprays from the pharmacist.

user2466 · 19/06/2025 21:33

Does it not get picked up on the test? I did a test last week as I felt unwell. Was negative. DP did one last week too and that was negative too

It's covid. I would test again OP, sometimes have to be 4 - 7 days in for it to show up on the test.

abracadabra1980 · 19/06/2025 21:48

I'm 100% sure I have had it and that it was probably Covid - the fatigue that accompanies it is unreal. For me it also made my ears bubble, my sinuses rage and six months later I finally feel I'm getting over it. The razor blade throat was a common symptom - I normally don't get bad throats as I have no tonsils. It felt laryngeal to me but the Dr thinks it was Covid. It was rife in our area.

user2466 · 19/06/2025 22:14

@abracadabra1980 I’ve got no tonsils either so don’t really get sore throats too - not like this one anyway. It’s awful

The fatigue is awful too especially as I have an 18 month old

Yes! Had it a month ago. Incredibly painful to swallow but only in the mornings. I'd take a couple of paracetamols and it would go until the next day. Worst throat pain ever!

Ferretedaway · 19/06/2025 22:36

I read an article about the latest variant of covid and as PPs have said,a ‘razor blade’ sore throat is the main identifying symptom of this version. The other symptoms sound to be the ones we are familiar with - headache, fever, aches, fatigue, nausea, the runs etc. I hope you’re over the worst very soon.

Since when was a bog standard severely sore throat a “new strain of Covid?!” Every year I have a sore throat which is so sore that I wish I could gulp anaesthetic

OneFineDay13 · 19/06/2025 23:10

I had it the other day it's just hayfever with me

Stinkbomb · 19/06/2025 23:17

Yep - and an absolutely blinding headache, nose and eyes dripping alike a tap, fatigue, aches, temperature/chills etc.
my DM and DMIL have same symptoms and tested positive for Covid, I won’t test because it doesn’t make a difference, it’s just as easy to pick up as a cold & we can’t prevent it anymore than we can flu or a cold 1 just look after yourself, plenty of fluids and paracetamol etc etc as you would for any sore throat/heavy cold/flu

mrsfollowill · 19/06/2025 23:44

last time I had covid this was the main symptom- horrible the worst yet and I've had covid 4 times at least that I know of. Fatigue was unreal and the the body aches. Had lots of cold drinks with ice and lollies. 1st time I had it was a breeze- just gets worse each time. I was in bed for a couple of days. WFH but flexible- so didn't go sick- could do a couple of hours and have a nap for an hour or 2 then do a few more hours as and when but if I had a 9-5 office could not have carried on. Hope you start to feel better soon.

feelingbleh · 19/06/2025 23:52

I had covid recently and its exactly how it started although it could be hay-fever or it could be from using a fan

Jayne35 · 20/06/2025 18:27

Could be covid, could be any bug. I was off work for two weeks in 2017 with a horrendous throat, couldn’t swallow, couldn’t speak. Eventually went to docs and they said it was Larygitus.

DemonsandMosquitoes · 20/06/2025 18:42

Yes. Mine was Covid, just over it.

I was about to say this. Sore throat in the morning, and running nose, then an hour later the antihistamine has kicked in and I’m fine

user2466 · 20/06/2025 21:43

Did another Covid test which was negative. Went to see the GP who said my throat was red and heart rate was elevated - she said it’s most probably viral and needs to run its course but I could use a throat numbing spray

I had these symptoms afew weeks ago. I was sure it would turn out to be Covid but did 3 tests over ten days and no, not Covid. Bloody horrible though and felt like it went on forever.

user2466 · 21/06/2025 12:52

Day four and I’m so fed up 🙃 feels like this is going on forever! The tiredness whilst having an 18 month is nothing life I’ve ever experienced before. Feel so fed up

I had about a month ago and just feel like myself this weekend. It presented like covid I had before, which was with symptoms, then felt a bit better, and then a relapse to hideous fatigue.

Saysayonara · 21/06/2025 17:33

Same here, I thought I was getting better, then the next day felt worse again. It went on for about 3 weeks, I thought it was never going to end. Then gradually over several days it fizzled out.
