My 16yo daughter has just been through 2 years of fixed brace treatment with a private orthodontist. The braces were removed today, but we've realised that the upper teeth are flaring out slightly - it, not coming straight down at a 90 degree angle. We went back to the orthodontist to discuss just now but he has said that because her bite with the lower jaw teeth is so close, he can't straighten the top teeth fully without extraction. Obviously we don't want that. I've included a picture that is pretty much what it looks like now.

Is it a bad job or is he right?

Dentist DH - It’s impossible to know if it’s a good or bad result without seeing previous pictures of the teeth. There’s rarely such a thing as a perfect result, it’s more a compromise as some factors (such as the bite) can be outside the control of the orthodontist.
The best idea would be a private second opinion, just to see if they feel anything more could be done.
I hope this helps!

Orthodontics isn’t for cosmetic reasons. It’s to get bites and tooth spacing correct for long term dental health. So the 90 degree angle you mention is unrealistic and not the goal of orthodontics.

If you are concerned it’s not a good job, go to another private orthodontist to see if anything more is needed.
