Where should I stop on M6 northbound as Knutsford Services were disgusting

I’m due to drive to Lake District and need to find somewhere nice to stop for a coffee and toilet break. Last time I did the journey, the services at Knutsford were appalling for lots of reasons. Can anyone recommend somewhere we can stop instead for a little pit stop? Thanks.

@Mydoghealsmyheart Tebay may be too far north?

Otherwise, Which, has this list from best to worst

ErrolTheDragon · 17/06/2025 11:46

I think we’ve always found Stafford North ok, if that’s far enough up.

The list posted by the PP seems about right, although we tend to avoid Tebay as it’s often too busy. In addition, the Lymm services at (I think) J20 are fine IME, it’s signed as a truck stop but plenty of car parking, we quite often stop there for a wee when we’re heading south.

Notreallyme27 · 17/06/2025 11:48

Stafford is half decent. Keele and Charnock Richard are awful. Sandbach at a push. Tebay is the best.

parsnippot · 17/06/2025 11:49

Pull off the motorway and go to Booths in Knutsford?

Gingercar · 17/06/2025 12:04

Stafford North isn’t bad. Lots of trees and a nice lake.
Hilton Park has good shops and food outlets but the toilets can whiff.

Mydoghealsmyheart · 17/06/2025 13:16

Thanks to you all, I’m going to go through the suggestions by looking at their locations on a map and see which are best.

Another vote for pulling off completely and going to a Booths. Make sure to get a Booths bag (or 4) for future shopping trips.

Mydoghealsmyheart · 17/06/2025 13:18

I’ve never heard of Booths, is it a restaurant chain?

Northern supermarket chain, upmarket like Waitrose. Nice cafés.

CountryQueen · 17/06/2025 13:24

It’s better than bloody Waitrose! Get to Booths, you’ll be glad you did

PizzaSophiaLoren · 17/06/2025 13:25

Services are all grim (except Gloucester).

I’d head for Knutsford town centre for a leg stretch and coffee. It’s really pretty.

You’ve not been to Tebay then

Tebay every time

Maybe if you’re driving to Scotland but it’s near Penrith so it’s way too far north for someone visiting the lakes who wanted a break near Knutsford.Confused

CharlotteFlax · 17/06/2025 13:41

To everyone saying Tebay - a.) it's too far north for the Lakes (the OP is clearly coming from the south) and b.) it's too close to the Lakes to be any kind of reasonable stop on the way!

Enjoy your first trip to Booths, OP!

High Leigh garden centre is nice, just north of Knutsford, easily reached from either J19 or 20

IKnowAristotle · 17/06/2025 13:50

Only commenting to agree about Knutsford. We broke up a journey to Scotland with a stay over at the Travelodge there. It was two years ago and I've not recovered from the horror.

Even nicer is Primrose Hill and that's just next to Lymm Services. Go there OP. It's a 30 second drive past Lymm services and it's the nicest place with a resident robin, gorgeous toasties and the best cakes in the area.

Cliftrip · 17/06/2025 13:57

My "secret" on a long journey is to turn off the motorway and head for a church steeple. You'll usually find a pub lunch and if not, try the next village.

Starlight1984 · 17/06/2025 14:02

Tebay every time! But depends whereabouts in the Lakes you're going. If South Lakes then probably no point as you're almost there!

saynn · 17/06/2025 14:04

If you come off at junction 23 you are right by newton le willows which is lovely?

First time I've ever heard Newton le Willows described as lovely.

KeepTalkingBeth · 17/06/2025 14:07

I now need gruesome details about the fully horror of Knutsford services

Actually, if you've been to Gloucester you essentially have been to Tebay. And Cairn Lodge. They're pretty much identical - exactly the same menus that haven't changed since I can't remember when. They do have the cheapest EV chargers on the motorway so we stop frequently at both Tebay and Cairn Lodge and the novelty wore off for me a long time ago. You can fortunately get a bar of dairy milk and a can of diet coke in the petrol station though, when you get fed up of paying half your monthly mortgage for a bag of artisan cacao chips made by orphans in the Amazon rain forest and a can of lychee flavoured mermaid's tears.
