Friend hasn't opened gift I sent after a week - weird?

I posted my friend a couple of gifts when he moved home last weekend. It wasn't anything lavish, just a couple of 'in joke' new home type of gifts. I thought it odd he hadn't mentioned the gift, we text nearly every day about different things. Today, I mentioned that I could see they had been delivered last Monday. He said he hadn't opened them and he was "enjoying the anticipation" ? I really hope he isn't getting too excited - it is only an oven glove and a mug! Am I overthinking this ? Is it weird? We have been friends for 30 years - went to uni together, worked together, shared a house (not romantic) and remained friends through marriages, children and divorces etc. Yet, I am struggling to understand what is going on - maybe I am just impatient ! What do you all make of this?

He might just be busy as he's just moved house...

Poopeepoopee · 16/06/2025 15:46

Thats weird yeah.

JabbaTheBeachHut · 16/06/2025 15:47

Sounds like he's misplaced it or he's trying to work out which gift was from you.

SushiSheep · 16/06/2025 15:48

Probably under a pile boxes...

dogcatkitten · 16/06/2025 15:48

Sorting heaps of just moved in stuff, put them in a safe place until he's a bit organised in case of breaking, losing.

dogcatkitten · 16/06/2025 15:49

Or is he going to have a house warming party and is saving presents for that?

Ruelzdontapplyhere · 16/06/2025 15:51

I would imagine it’s been out down and he doesn’t remember where I between all the other stuff he hasn’t unpacked yet!

Or maybe he’s actually waiting until he’s unpacked and tidied and then wants to open them when he has somewhere to put them?

Doesn’t sound that odd to me if he’s moved.

Honon · 16/06/2025 15:52

I do this sometimes! I'll wait until I have a bit of time so I can settle down with a nice cup of tea or glass of wine and savour the moment, I enjoy the gift more that way. Maybe it is weird but life's tough and you have to take your small pleasures where you can get them 😂

ExtensivelyDecluttering · 16/06/2025 15:54

He's just moved house for goodness sake. Give the man a break.

Latenightreader · 16/06/2025 15:54

If he is anything like me and my last house move he has put it Somewhere and it gas vanished. He'll discover it in another three weeks behind the wine glasses or in a bag of winter clothes..

justkeepswimingswiming · 16/06/2025 15:55

Hes just moved house, hes most likely still unpacking give the poor man a break.

arcticpandas · 16/06/2025 15:58

But he told you why he didn't open it @ByAmberteacher . I understand this. When I'm too stressed I can't really enjoy opening a present so I would probably do exactly what he did (if the gifter was someone I knew well and who I thought would understand my waiting- if not I would open immediately and say thank you because it's the polite thing to do). He thinks that you are close so you won't mind him waiting.

NoCyclingInTheUKforMe · 16/06/2025 16:14

Bet he has mislaid it in the move. Be patient OP.

Thank you - this makes sense and does sound like him - thank you

Not weird at all, probably just forgot where it was or something or hasn't had time. I like to sit down and open presents properly to fully relish moment. You are def overthinking this imo.

Has he got a birthday coming up and thinks it’s for his birthday?
