What to serve with burgers?

Having a very small bbq tomorrow, just burgers and sausages, but one of the guests can’t eat bread / pasta / potatoes / rice. Any suggestions to accompany said meat that’s a bit more exciting than a green salad? They’re not being awkward in any way (medical issue) and I want to make the effort to ensure they enjoy their meal.

Can they have couscous?

SupposesRoses · 14/06/2025 12:47

Can they eat sweet potatoes?

Grilled asparagus and grilled pepper.

Halloumi red onion pepper and mushroom kebab skewers.

Something like tabbouleh? Or a giant couscous salad, much nicer than normal couscous.

Corn on the cob
homemade coleslaw
quinoa salad?
beetroot salad

Are there any carbs they can eat? Not being able to eat rice or potatoes as well as wheat products is very limiting.

Could they eat coleslaw, or is there an ingredient in mayonnaise they can't have?

Also, sausages usually have rusk in so they may not be able to eat those either.

Homemade coleslaw/waldorf salad/hawaiian salad/

These are great suggestions, thank you 🙏. Cous cous and roasted veg salad, and coleslaw will be perfect.

I was going to suggest that cous cous is not gluten free - if that's the problem but quinoa is. You can buy it in pouches so you don't get saddled with a big bag or have to faff with cooking it... or puy lentils or something similar? Hummus?

If your friend can't eat bread can you make sure the sausages are rusk free?
Is your friend gluten intolerant? If she is she can't eat couscous either.

Isn’t cous cous just tiny pasta? Are they def ok with that?

Yes. It's made from durum wheat.

LeaveALittleNote · 14/06/2025 14:11

Couscous is basically pasta, isn’t it? So that won’t be any good.

OP, maybe do a quinoa salad instead of couscous salad. Quinoa is actually a seed I believe, but couscous is wheat.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 14/06/2025 14:13

Coleslaw - homemade only - with white cabbage, onion, carrot, celery and apple - and only just enough mayonnaise to bind it, not swimming in the stuff. Always goes down well.

Yes I know. That’s what I said.
