What to eat after illness?

What’s the best thing to eat to ease yourself back into eating solids (cripes, I sound like a baby!)
I’ve been sick, and still have no real appetite but I feel as if I should eat something to build my strength back up.
Sorry, it all sounds very dramatic and Victorian doesn’t it.
I’ve just had a glass of fresh OJ, and managing to keep that down so hoping to actually eat something next.

I have had similar this week and online it said plain stuff. I had some rice cakes and a banana and it sat well.

If it involved D&V then stick to plain ‘white’ foods such as bread, pasta, rice, potatoes and chicken broth.

MoistVonL · 12/06/2025 12:06

Jesus, orange juice was going in hard - so acidic!

Clear soups, crackers, banana, that sort of thing to start. If your gut is ok with those, moving on to a baked potato, and gradually introducing proteins from there.

WilfredsPies · 12/06/2025 12:08

You can get sachets of stuff from the chemist to replace your electrolytes (I’m not sure what electrolytes are, but we lose them when we have D&V). Absolutely disgusting but will do you some good.

I’m a big fan of Jacob’s crackers and plain hoola hoops after I’ve been ill. Would probably make a nutrition expert wince, but it works for me.

Is there anything you fancy? It is usually 'right'!

Chicken soup (if I had someone to make me a beautiful one!), toast, fairly bland food is probably what I would go for. A chicken sandwich perhaps.

BreakingBroken · 12/06/2025 12:15

BRAT; bananas rice applesauce toast.
yogurt (plain with good pro biotic)
Cereal with milk.
chicken
basically light and easy to digest foods.

SushiSheep · 12/06/2025 12:19

@Chewbecca that’s just it, I don’t actually fancy anything tbh, but I just feel so drained that I think I had better eat something. Have had nothing solid since Monday, (come down with some weird sickness bug) and am only just emerging back into human life form today.

@MoistVonL sorry! Was that hardcore 😅

@MagicalMystical I hope you feel better soon.

Thank for the suggestions everyone x

BRAT is mostly debunked now. Eat what you fancy.

CointreauVersial · 12/06/2025 13:42

Toast

Jellycatspyjamas · 12/06/2025 13:43

I’m giving my DD ambrosia custard pots and bananas to help her eat after a horrible bug.

orange juice, fresh or not, is very acidic. Avoid.

I’ve got a loaf of fresh giraffe bread and a ready made chilled chicken and vegetable soup for when I can stomach it. Feeling a bit queasy again ☹️
Thanks for all the advice and suggestions.

Whatever you want/feel you can eat. Now is not the time to worry about nutrition, just getting some calories inside you and staying hydrated is all that is important. What you can stomach will be different to what others could stomach. I like yoghourt in these situations but I know just the thought would make others sick.

When you can keep one down, start a multivitamin for a bit.

Papyrophile · 12/06/2025 16:59

Soup is good, with toast (no butter) or crackers or rice cakes. Bananas, grapes, apples. Little pops of crisp cold sweetness. Plenty of clear fluids.
