Suddenly having loads of static electricity shocks

I am prone to these. But wonder why I have times when I get loads, off all sorts of surfaces? Got one off the cat when I went to pet her! Anyone else?

Are you wearing new shoes? I found that when I wear my Sketchers, I get loads of static shocks and also pass them on to my family! I can't wear them any longer because of this.

Rattymare · 11/06/2025 17:43

I do with sketchers and also a pair of lookalike Dr M boots from M&S.

soupycustard · 11/06/2025 17:43

Getting electric/static shocks was on a list of peri and menopause symptoms I was given by my doctor! If you're in that age group, could be that?

BarBellBarbie · 11/06/2025 17:52

No to sketchers, and well post menopause. Wonder if it's the weather?

I get it a lot and its usually shoes but I bought a pair of Primark slippers and had to throw them out. I got shocks off everything and my poor dog just didn't want me near her. 😄

TheDandyLion · 11/06/2025 18:40

Sudden change in air pressure can cause electric shocks

Atmospheric conditions affect it massively.

Yes that's my guess

Yes. I even posted a thread a couple of months ago talking about how it felt like I was developing super powers. They are so intense you can often see them even midday. It’s not as bad now that the weather is warming up, but definitely still happening.

Fucking hell another thing down to menopause, wtf..

Gwenhwyfar · 11/06/2025 19:11

Isn't it something that happens when the air is too dry? You could try to humidify the air around you.

Snozzlemaid · 11/06/2025 19:12

It’s definitely footwear that does it for me. I have a pair of Skechers bobs slippers and I get zapped all the time wearing them.

Polyester.

I get them from shoes and also have some leggings that give me them. Also, my car! It's electric, don't know if that has anything to do with it, however I get loads from my car door handles or after I've just gotten out of my car and touch a different handle or trolley or something. I don't get them when I have been driving or been a passenger in my husbands car. I absolutely hate them.

GoodEnoughParents · 11/06/2025 19:19

Same! No advice just strange

Iceboy80 · 11/06/2025 19:19

Definitely new shoes or slippers, I was recently getting shocks of thing that were not even metal and it was off new slippers.

myplace · 11/06/2025 19:22

Happening today and yesterday to me. No new shoes, clothes or carpets. Has to be weather related.

ShodAndShadySenators · 11/06/2025 19:25

Low humidity

DoubleShotEspresso · 11/06/2025 22:21

This happens to me when my sciatica plays up- so strange!

Mumteedum · 11/06/2025 22:23

Worse when I've either blow dried or straightened my hair. I hate touching the car sometimes.

Work carpets and moving chairs over them does it too.

Yes to car handles. But as to footwear, don't think so. I wear lots of different footwear, don't see a pattern

Is the cat black and is it your familiar? 😉

verityveritas · 23/06/2025 08:41

Shoes, synthetic fabric, and dry conditions will all result in static build up. I’m just glad most hotels now have key cards instead of keys, and dry environment, nylon carpet and rubber soles and kazing ⚡️one almighty shock!
shopping trollies and car doors are the worst for me, although my cat and I both got zapped, and she still hasn’t forgiven me!
