In so much pain, I might throw up

I had a steroid injection today in the base of my thumb. It’s throbbing and feeling terrible. I feel sick as if I might actually throw up. I’ve taken codeine which hasn’t helped. What would you do?

Let yourself throw up. Sorry you're in so much pain though

Ive been sick with bad pain before, kidney stones.

Arhh that’s horrid, can you take any more pain relief, hot bath, tv distraction, deep breaths and try and zonk out and sleep.

Anti emetic would help - anti histamines can have the same effect.

Codeine makes me feel sick but feeling sick with pain is awful OP.

Do you have anything like Voltarol or Ibuprofen gel in the house to see if applying that to the thumb/joint helps easy it a little?

fourelementary · 10/06/2025 22:12

Codeine can make you feel sick also… have you alternative pain relief?

Octavia64 · 10/06/2025 22:13

For additional pain relief - paracetamol is good with codeine. Do you have other painkillers (tramadol, ibuprofen?)

I’ve had quite a few injections into the base of my thumb and it can be very painful. Have you tried putting an ice pack/frozen peas on it? Wrapped in a tea towel and 10/15 minutes, no longer. It’s called a steroid flare and will settle down.

I do sympathise Wrap ice around it to numb it. Obviously wrap it in a tea towel to avoid frostbite
You can take ibuprofen and Paracetamol together

Thanks for all the comments. I had a terrible night and didn’t sleep a wink with pressure and pain keeping me awake. I finally had a few hours sleep this morning but still can’t use my thumb very well at all. It’s very stiff but the pain has reduced. I won’t be going into work tomorrow because I’m not safe to drive.

In comparison with my other hand, I can’t believe how painful this one has been.
