Holiday and Savings

My husband recently booked a holiday for us and our children. We haven’t been on holiday for many years, we had some savings and my husband had decided that in the summer holidays we should book a holiday abroad and go away, we found a place which was reasonable, I reluctantly agreed because this would leave us without any savings. The money saved was meant to be used for a new sofa, our sofa is falling apart, a new carpet, it’s stained in many areas, replacing the curtains (they’re ripped) and to finish decorating the sitting room, we still have lots of decorating to do in the house. I feel the money spent for a week away, could have been far better spent. It was my fault for agreeing, but since then I’ve just felt it was the wrong decision.
I’m not sure if I’m overthinking though!

I think that if it’s just cosmetic stuff, then having some quality family time is not the most practical use of the cash, but it will probably do you all the world of good. Essentially, it’s done now, so you just need to put a positive spin on it, sew up the ripped curtains and borrow a carpet shampooer from someone.

Is spending money and food budget accounted for? Or do you have to find that on top?

If you haven’t been for years you could honestly end up getting to the stage where they’re teens and can’t go because of work or something- good you’re all getting a holiday!

DW always says you need to make memories as you can never be sure what’s around the corner. I dont like having no savings, but a holiday would help with the memories more than a new sofa/ carpet

Just enjoy the holiday!
I believe in experiences before material things. Honestly, you can get a new settee any time, but DC will soon grow into grumpy teens hating all things to do with family holidays!

Thank you all! You’re right about the memories. You’ve made me feel better!
I grew up in poverty and never had a holiday or money, until I became an adult, so I do overthink these things!
