No hot water in holiday property in cornwall

HappyHippo99 · 08/06/2025 21:47

My husband and I had a shower this morning and my daughter had a shallow bath (she’s a toddler) this afternoon. We’ve done one load of washing and the usual washing up etc. The water supply is via water tank. Should we contact the holiday rental providers tonight or tomorrow morning?

Is there a property information book or folder? Have you checked it for information/instructions about hot water to see if there's a switch or timer that you need to set or reset?

If you are going to message them (as someone who manages holiday lets) I would drop them a note this evening and say that you have the issue but you don't need it looked at tonight, as it will take time to organise someone if it is an issue.

If the water is heated by electricity instead of a gas boiler, then you need to switch it on. The switch is usually in the cupboard where the hot water tank is.

Thank you just found it. Looks like it’s on

You don't get instant hot water with this arrangement. If the immersion heater is on, but the water is cold, then you have to wait for it to warm up. If it's not warm in the morning, contact the agent.
You might have to take shorter showers than you're used to.

WanderingWisteria · 08/06/2025 22:13

Is the immersion on a timer?
I’d message the owners tonight and say that you don’t have any hot water and are not sure if there is something you should be doing to get the immersion to heat up or if there is an issue. At my parent’s house, the immersion looks as though it is permanently on if you were to look at the socket but there’s a timer which overrides that. You either have to disconnect the timer or adjust the settings so that the hot water is being heated more frequently. You also can’t have more than 2 normal showers and a very quick third shower off the one tank.

Gardenbumblebee · 08/06/2025 22:13

Is there another switch connected to it?

HappyHedgehog247 · 08/06/2025 22:15

I would message tonight!

Dartmoorcheffy · 08/06/2025 22:16

It will take a while to warm up if you have used all the hot water. But if you've both had a shower etc then you'll be fine until tomorrow.

JohnofWessex · 08/06/2025 22:23

It might be on Economy 7 or similar so it only comes on overnight.

If its actually 'on' you will hear it bubbling

Thank you I’ve emailed them.

My husband and I had showers this morning, my daughter had a bath this afternoon about 3pm after getting back from the beach and we cooked dinner and did the normal washing up and then I put a load in the washing machine. The water went off about 7pm so I don’t think we’ve used it frivolously?

It’s completely silent

This was my childhood lol. You always needed to put the immersion on for a bath. Anything above the normal washing up etc would need the immersion.

I’d be surprised at a holiday let on this system not having a cold fill only washer though!

The washing machine will use cold water so you can discount that. Hopefully the owners will reply soon, but yeah, you need that heater turned on and it should gurgle away.

Are you sure there is not a switch hiding on the far side of plug from the pull cord? It looks from the photo as if there might be.

hyggetyggedotorg · 08/06/2025 22:38

PS. Our immersion switch wasn’t by the tank. It was on a wall on the upstairs landing.

Yes sorry my picture is rubbish now looking at it - the switch on the far side of the plug is switched to ’on’

We have been looking for a mystery switch somewhere hoping that it’s it

Wouldn’t be a massive issue but we also have a 3 month old that will need a bath tomorrow and my daughter will want to be on the beach tomorrow morning again
