Do you think anybody still smokes a pipe?

Talking to my 11 year old about smoking and DH mentioned how he hasn't seen anybody smoking a pipe for years.

I was instantly transported back to being young and visiting an elderly old uncle who used to smoke one, the smell of it would instantly give me a headache as soon as I got inside the house, it was awful!

I must have not seen anybody smoking a pipe in public for about 20 years! I've also worked with elderly people in their homes for about 8 years and have never come across it there either.

Do you reckon it's died out?

I met someone last year who was in their 30's and smoked a pipe!

Part of me hopes not - very fond memories of my step grandfather who loved his pipe.

I had a great Uncle George that smoked a pipe. It did have a very strong smell. Not seen any for decades

I know of a few, but agree there’s not many- probably because it’s already killed them off.

I have a neighbour that does, he’s an ancient farmer. Can always tell when it’s his tractor as you can smell it 🤣

I have a male friend who smokes a pipe, early 70s age, and I think has smoked it since his 30s. He is regarded as quite cool by the young people he knows!

I was helping to clear the house of my deceased cousin this week and we came across the pipe rack complete with two pipes which had belonged to my Uncle who died in 2002. I remember he wore his dentures down in one place so he had a dip where the pipe fitted neatly between his teeth.
I haven't seen anyone smoke a pipe for many years now.

I have seen the odd hipster type smoking a pipe, but definitely for 'the image' more than anything.

I know a man in his 40s who does. It smells lovely.

Superhansrantowindsor · 07/06/2025 21:36

My grandfather smoked a pipe. The smell was horrific.

I went diving in Tenerife just before COVID so around 6/7 years ago and there was a Russian woman in the group, aged maybe 40/50 who smoked a pipe.

Tiggiwinklescousin · 07/06/2025 21:38

My late husband smoked a pipe. He was 47 when he died in 2019. He was the last person I saw smoking one. Think it's definitely dying out.

Ukholidaysaregreat · 07/06/2025 21:39

Love it!

MelaniesLaugh · 07/06/2025 21:39

Out of curiosity I googled about pipes, I found some nice sounding tobacco which apparently has a hint of coconut. But pipes themselves are expensive, starting from a couple of hundred pounds to over £2000!

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 07/06/2025 21:43

Wowsers. We have a family friend who used to smoke a pipe. He smoked cherry tobacco iirc. Smelled better than cigarettes.

GoodVibesHere · 07/06/2025 21:47

Haven't seen anyone smoke a pipe in years. Don't see cigars anymore either, though they were only for special occasions I think.

Fillyfrog · 07/06/2025 22:13

Cigars were what started off the conversation actually, she saw one on TV and asked what it was. It's just not common place anymore is it, cigars, smoking and pipes. Instead all she sees is vaping.

I know a couple of old boys who still smoke a pipe, both farmers. And a thirty odd year old who just loves to be super duper quirky 🤪🙄 it’s definitely an altogether unique smell!
