I'm trying to work out if I should get an ipad or not!

Sounds good in theory but in reality i'm not sure i would use it to its full potential because I have a pc that i use for everything, its linked up to my tv so i can watch stuff on a big screen rather than a monitor, I use my iphone for everything else ie messages, whatsapp etc.

what do you use yours for?

OK, I bought my first one in 2011 as I was travelling for work. Although I was provided with a work laptop, the iPad meant I did not have to lug 2 laptops around and I could deal with online banking, mails etc. on my private device.
However, since then I use it for virtually everything I would use my laptop for, apart from writing anything longer than an e-mail.
I have the Kindle app on it, so loads of books stored, which is useful for travelling.
You will ask why I don't do a lot of these things on my phone.
Well, having had a mobile since 1996, I was used to them being (very expensive) used only to make and receive calls and texts. Have had a smartphone since 2011-ish, but I still use it mainly for the original purpose plus the odd photo.
Also I am getting older and I find the iPad easier on my eyes and easier to text on a larger keyboard. As I hate having to adjust my movements for people glued to their phone screens, I deliberately decided not to go down that route.
I use the iPad for WhatsApp as well.

Pretty much everything, but I only use my computer for work.

  • read books on it
  • take it on holiday and watch Netflix on it
  • read MN on it
  • use it for email (has a good keyboard)
  • watch YouTube…

I’ve had a few over the years and they’ve never been used cos I just use my phone.

I use my tablet to scroll through the Internet such as mumsnet or news sites, looking up things like clothes or rightmove /rabbit holes or order prescriptions. My phone is used for text, calls or WhatsApp as the screen is too small for me to read websites etc. My laptop is too heavy except to be used on a table but the dining chair is too uncomfortable. I use that for banking, shopping orders (after searching on the tablet), and looking at the wildlife cameras as I need a bigger screen/better antivirus. I would replace the tablet immediately if it broke.

Internet, games and watch films

I've got a Samsung tablet. The screen is excellent. I use it all the time, use it for all browsing on the internet, writing emails, watching TV if on holiday as its so portable. I don't read books on it but I could. No tablet or PC anymore.

Mostly the kindle app to read in bed.

I have a laptop which I use when something needs a lot of typing. Otherwise at home I use a tablet. Just bought a decent Samsung tablet which is so much nicer than a phone for most of the things you use a phone for. I read the paper; general doom scrolling; watch YouTube craft tutorials; online shopping; download films for travel. I don't read books as I prefer kindle.

I have an iPad but I barely use it, it’s too heavy. I either use my laptop or my phone. I also have a kindle which is much lighter, I use that a lot.

Pashazade · 07/06/2025 16:24

Everything, unless I have stuff to do that just doesn’t work well on the iPad so serious word processing or spreadsheet work. Otherwise it gets used all the time. The laptop gets used maybe once a fortnight.

I use mine for everything if I’m at home. Never my phone. Why use a small screen when I can use a larger one?

I use it for everything. I got rid of the laptop and find my phone too small.

Everything! Reading my kindle, reading the Times (we have a subscription), online shopping - Sainsburys, Amazon, everywhere! Playing games (Candy Crush is my guilty pleasure), browsing Mumsnet, looking at social media - Facebook and Instagram, running my craft business through Facebook. I would be lost without it. Mine is a fairly old model and keeps demanding an update which it doesn’t have enough storage space for 🙄 and I will have to give in and get a replacement at some point. But I find it so useful, I like the larger screen and don’t need my glasses on unlike when I’m on my phone!
