Just had cold sausages for breakfast & it reminded me how I used to love them on picnics.
DM’s legendary mashed egg & tomato sandwiches
Cold chicken drumsticks
Mini porkpies
Having different drinks to usual like proper lemonade or cloudy applejuice
I don’t like coffee but when I smell it in a thermos, it reminds me of DF having it in the car during rainy day picnics. For some reason, it made me think of ham sandwiches!
On one boat /isolated beach trip, our host produced a huge bowl of very recently caught shrimps. So good!

@myfavouritemutant grated cheese and jam together?

Suppose it's a bit like chutney! 😅

RabbitsRock · 05/06/2025 10:10

Forgotten DM used to grill any leftover sandwiches ( if the fillings were suitable) for tea & I loved that too

I have stopped buying party rings because I can easily demolish a whole packet in one sitting!

One boy on my son’s d of e practice walk had about 8 packs of party rings, demolishing them as he went. He was the same at birthday parties when they were 7 😁

A late night picnic at my Aunty’s with cheese sandwiches & the sweetest most delicious cherry tomatoes I have ever eaten, straight from the greenhouse.

Cold chicken drumsticks
Real Cornish pasties when we were on holiday there (or Devon) - tasted so much nicer than the ones at home
Nectarines or peaches (didn't have those a lot ordinarily)

RabbitsRock · 05/06/2025 10:20

Homemade flapjacks

Cheese and cucumber sandwiches might have one for lunch today. 😋

MiddleAgedDread · 05/06/2025 10:23

It's not a picnic without a cocktail sausage for me!!

RabbitsRock · 05/06/2025 16:07

Anyone else?

Pork pie! We only had it for picnics and Christmas

RightSaidFrederica · 05/06/2025 19:18

Oh I came on to say cold sausages! DM used to pack them in the empty boxes from a cereal variety pack (which we only had on holiday) so doubly special.

NatWestPigFamily · 05/06/2025 19:29

My mum would make corned beef and onion sandwiches, boiled eggs, chicken drumsticks and quiche. We would also have cucumber, celery and carrot sticks with tomatoes. She would usually make a cake and we had bananas and melon slices.

NatWestPigFamily · 05/06/2025 19:31

Oh and pork pies and she would cut the food with a pocket knife with a pearl handle.

Seeline · 05/06/2025 19:41

We never had sandwiches - I'm not sure if it was cost (didn't have much money), or needing to carry everything (didn't have a car).
My mum used to butter a whole pack of ryvita and then sandwich them. We had a cold sausage, a hardboiled egg and a couple of slices of cheese. Sometimes a whole tomato to eat like an apple. An apple and a slab of homemade fruit cake. Occasionally we would have a Penguin-type chocolate biscuits or a packet of crisps but they were real treats. Always a large bottle of weak orange squash.

And a damp flannel in a plastic bag for wiping hands before and after eating 😁
