SEN bike/trike - can your kids ride?

My DS5 has mastered the 3 wheeled scooter and he is loving life. I'd be ecstatic if he could learn to ride a bike. I'm looking at a three wheeler to start as his concentration isn't good and he hyper focuses on fiddly things when he is scooting or looks behind him.

Do any of your SEN kids ride, and if so what and how old when they learnt?

DS2 (hypotonia...poor muscle tone, autism, learning disabilities) had a special needs trike , which took him up to about aged 10, then an adult sized trike (he is very tall). He did actually learn to ride a 2 wheeler at about 13,..many hours of dh running down the street behind him, but was never confident enough to actually ride a bike for pleasure and also not interested enough to make it worth it, so he gave up. But he struggled with anything like that.

A decent trike is great if he isn't bothered about what his mates are riding, and if he is bothered he will probably master it eventually. How about a bigger balance bike? They are so good for learning the skills needed!

My DD (8 - DS&ASD) can scoot with a scooter with 2 wheels at the front. She can do the bike/trike with no pedals, but doesn't have the strength to pedal.

My son 8yrs AuDhd rides a BMX. No gears to think about (he won't ride his road bike!) Just pedalling and breaks. His concentration is poor in the afternoons and so we cycle to school in the morning and put his bike in the car home!
