Sharing bath water…acceptable or grim?

Lighthearted of course! What are your thoughts on the sharing of bath water between two people? Not necessarily a mum having a bath with their young child, but someone having a bath then getting out before giving their family member a shout to go in.

Grim and unsanitary? Or totally normal at your house?

Not really much different to using a public swimming pool? Sure the chemicals kill any germs but all the dead skin is still floating around

And people pee and gob and snot into public pools

WhatYaKnowGud · 04/06/2025 22:07

It was normal in the 1970s.

It is GRIMMER THAN A GRIM THING ON GRIMSDAY in GRIMSBY this century.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 04/06/2025 22:08

I used to have to do this with my sister, even as a teenager, right up until I left home, and I hated it. She always got the hot, clean water, I got the cooling, slightly grubby water, and I had to clean the bath and tidy the bathroom afterwards.

I even asked if we could take turns - we only had baths on Sunday and Wednesday - so I suggested I went first once a week, and she did the other time - but my mum refused, point blank. Dsis was her favourite, so she was never going to disadvantage her over me, plus mum and dad shared bath water too, and mum always went first, so I feel that, if she’d admitted it wasn’t fair for me to never get the second hand bath water, she might have had to admit it wasn’t fair for dad either.

DH always gets into mine - never the other way round 😀

Exactly this 🤣

Endofyear · 04/06/2025 22:15

My DH always has my bath water after me! I have it really hot so it's still plenty hot enough for him. We've been married 35 years and have always done this. I always have first bath though!

And people pee and gob and snot into public pools

But there is chlorine in the water

misssunshine4040 · 04/06/2025 22:20

All these people happy to share a bath but according to a recent thread won’t share towels.
Whats the difference? Sharing bath water seems far worse than sharing a towel

GoodVibesHere · 04/06/2025 22:22

yakkity · 04/06/2025 21:10

Don’t you ever scru. Each other’s backs and sit and lounge together? It’s just a smaller version of a hot tub

The thought of scrubbing someone's back in the bath makes me queasy

Somnambule · 04/06/2025 22:23

Gosh you're a squeamish lot. Totally normal between close family members.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 04/06/2025 22:30

Well, I absolutely hated it, @Somnambule.

Tictocktictock · 04/06/2025 22:32

Grim gross and disgusting my mother would do this and there was 4 kids plus her and had to share towels as well then she would just hang them over the doors to air out yuk.
We would get a bath once a week or once a fortnight in the holidays.
She would stand in there until we had a wash two a time in the bath on your period or not.

When i left home (ran away) i hated baths and only have showers still do.
Im very high on cleanliness and hygiene.
I wash towels after every use.

NattyTurtle59 · 04/06/2025 22:35

The use of the word "grim" in this context is far worse than sharing bathwater with someone else.

Viviennemary · 04/06/2025 22:36

It's the dirtiest most unhygienic thing ever. Can't' believe it's something folk actually do in this day and age.

supercalifragilistic123 · 04/06/2025 22:36

I don't get the big deal. It seems such a waste of water to run a fresh bath every time!

I never shave my legs if I know someone is getting in the bath after me though, that is grim.

drspouse · 04/06/2025 22:37

We used to when we were kids (summer of 76, there wasn't enough water, and it went on the garden after us).
DCs did when they were younger if it wasn't, er, contaminated.

almostbloody50 · 04/06/2025 22:38

I’ve always done it with my kids and DH, it’s normal, but my DS are now 18 & 21 and then it would be soooooo weird. So in my mind little kids and spouses.

Tooty78 · 04/06/2025 22:39

Nah, I lived this life back in the 60s.

Sofiewoo · 04/06/2025 22:41

The kids will share, occasionally DH will jump in after me. I would hardly call it “unsanitary”, we’ve often showered less than 12 hours before.

If your bath water is that dirty you should probably be washing more!

thisfilmisboring123 · 04/06/2025 22:42

I honestly can’t believe people still do this.
Grim as fuck.

PersianStar · 04/06/2025 22:44

I grew up with an immersion heater and we never did this! My mum would have freaked if it had even been suggested
I will bathe with DC but then I let most of the water out, fill it up again and then have an actual bath by myself
However DH will always jump into any of their baths but he does shower after.
he’s learnt not to ask me if Iwant him to “save the water” because I let the water out after and see and then clean the mess left after 4 grotty people

mindingmyown37 · 04/06/2025 22:44

Grim… I don’t even like baths myself because I feel like I’m bathing in my own dirt. When I was younger I didn’t have a choice as finances were tight had to share with my brother and he’d always get in first and the water was grim by the time I made it in. When we got into a better place financially, showers it was…. I was about 10, the only time I bathe now Is if I’ve pulled a muscle, the last time was literally last September. Before that 2/3 years….

OchAyeTheNo0 · 04/06/2025 22:44

Normal. I grew up like it (poor family).

Away2000 · 04/06/2025 23:12

My family used to make the kids do this. I was the youngest so got to use it last and by that time it was cold, gross and normally smelt like pee 🤢

cerealbar1 · 04/06/2025 23:22

My parents got in mine/ sibs bath water when we were kids.

I will happily get in after dc, just top up with hot water!

I wonder if you grew up with it you’re more likely to do it?
