Post hospital fogginess - advice needed

Hi everyone, I was in hospital recently for 4 nights for a kidney infection. It was a scary experience at times, with me experiencing hallucinations (possibly from a high fever and/or strong medication) and all the other symptoms that came with the infection. I also didn’t sleep or eat particularly well while I was in there. I was on strong IV antibiotics and I’m feeling better from the infection symptoms now, but now I’m out, my head feels SO foggy, like I’ve been drugged almost. I’m only on oral antibiotics now (no strong painkillers etc). I just feel really spaced out and fuzzy headed. My first night at home resulted in strange dreams where I kept waking up thinking I was being attacked. Luckily that has calmed down Is this normal after being in hospital for an illness like a kidney infection? I’m supposed to be going back to work tomorrow, but cognitively I feel so fuzzy. I’m a teacher as well, so need to be more ‘on it’. I wasn’t given any safety netting when discharged (and tbh I didn’t ask enough questions, as I was so exhausted and desperate to get home to DH and the kids), so not quite sure what to do next.

How long ago is “recently”?

Covidwoes · 04/06/2025 18:20

Sorry, that’s not very clear! Got discharged 2 days ago.

Completely to be expected I would say.

Yes, I’d say it’s completely normal. My guess is it’s from the infection, kidney and bladder infections are particularly known for this, not the antibiotics, so will take time to sort itself out. If you were poorly enough to be in hospital 2 days ago, you probably need a few more days to recover.

Thanks everyone! I had my DDs in hospital, but didn’t feel like this afterwards!

Really suggest you don't go back to work for another week
Kidney infections are nasty.

I read somewhere that it can take a week to recover from every night you are in hospital. Bad infections can take a while to recover from as your body needs to heal, I wouldn’t go back to work until you are feeling ready.

Something you might like to think about is probiotics to restore your gut biome. I had a UTI that progressed to a kidney infection that made me really unwell (although I didn't need hospitalisation). I had multiple courses of antibiotics which did eventually resolve the infection, but I felt wiped out and had really low mood for months afterwards. I remember it clearly because my life was on a great place at the time and I couldn't understand why I felt so flat. It wasn't until a couple of years later that I came across the whole gut-brain connection and the negative impact of antibiotics on the gut biome.

Not completely related to your symptoms but something to think about!

@SilverBlue56and @herculepoirotsmoustacheyou are right about work. I am also very tired, and sleeping lots. I just feel so guilty about being off!
@throwawaynametodaythat’s such a good point about gut health. I do feel really flat too. Would you recommend a specific brand?

I'm sorry I'm afraid I haven't got any specific recommendations. I'm sure there will be some threads on MN on the subject though! Hope you start to feel better soon.
