Are fake flowers in the garden tacky and cheap looking?

To preface, I am a terrible gardener who kills all plants. I have wasted so much money and time trying to tend a garden whilst basically watching it die.

I went down an internet rabbit hole and ended up buying a load of fake flowers which will fill all of my plant pots and hanging baskets. My hope is that they will give the desert wasteland some colour. What I don’t want is the look of a children's play centre! What are your thoughts? I can return it all unless I ‘plant’ it. 😃

We have a garden with plants - puppy destroyed my beautiful alliums 😭 and the rosemary died. Just spent £150 on more plants that I hope I’ll manage to keep alive. It’s hard and expensive but I love plants. If you don’t love them then I get not wanting the hassle.

gamerchick · 03/06/2025 20:56

OP you dont need to ask on here. You'll just a thread full of people trying to outdo each other with tacky.

You've got them so put them to use. You can freshen them up yearly.

Koalafan · 03/06/2025 20:57

They're pointless. Bees and insects need actual flowers.

No.

Sometimes they do. Sometimes they don't. Sometimes they start off looking tacky but over time seem to fit in, belong and look lovely.

All that matters is that you like them. It's your garden, enjoy it your way @NoEffingWay .😊

Dutchhouse14 · 03/06/2025 21:42

Yes they are

NoEffingWay · 03/06/2025 21:50

I have murdered lavenders, pansies, buddleja, various ‘hardy’ perennials, bushes, grasses and various hanging baskets pre-planted! I’m often away for days at a time so come back to a dead garden. It’s just not in my skill set. My mother despairs as her garden is glorious, green and lush.

Just do whatever makes you happy. I'm in a terraced row of 38 houses - I'm sure the bees and wildlife will just buzz over to the next garden or perhaps enjoy the large tree in the corner of my garden!

Objectrelations · 03/06/2025 21:51

Yes

NoEffingWay · 03/06/2025 21:52

The only thing that has survived is a blackberry bush that’s in a huge container. This is most likely because blackberry bushes would survive nuclear war 😂

The rest of my house is positively shining. Full of colour and light, fabrics and textures. It’s my little house which I take great care of and adore. The garden looks abandoned, unloved and forgotten about 😪

Hercisback1 · 03/06/2025 21:56

Please don't. They look really shit.

Buy herbs for the pots. They're impossible to kill. Put trays under them so they hold water while you're away.

PorgyandBess · 03/06/2025 21:57

Return them! They will never look anything other than cheap and nasty.

itbemay1 · 03/06/2025 22:19

Solidarity with your inadvertent, herbicidal maniac ways sister.✊️

I killed mint.😳😭

Daschund1 · 03/06/2025 22:23

Awful, but then I thought about it and realised I have many that aren't real. An artist friend created a ten foot tall ceramic flower on a granite base, which has pride of place in my enormous front garden. I also have flower sculptures, metal leaves, ferns, flowers and mushrooms, cabbage leaves made from concrete and more.
What I don't have is flowers pretending to be real, no one is fooled, even if they say differently. There's plenty of ways to add interest.
My gardens are huge and contain hundreds of flowers, shrubs, trees, fruits, herbs, etc. most are individually very low maintenance, requiring little skill.

midsummabreak · 03/06/2025 22:26

Do both- keep one or two fake plants and return the rest. Then plant bulbs and easy to grow plants in pots with your leftover money. Happy planting

LatteLady · 03/06/2025 20:18

Yes, they are... and don't get me started on fake lawns... just no.

Also those fake ball bush things that are either hanging or in pots or outside front doors!

Done41 · 03/06/2025 22:45

Can you not dig some small flower beds OP? Most things are hard to keep alive in pots and containers, need more watering and the soil loses nutrients over time.
My lawn is slowly disappearing as I’m making more and more flower beds, I’m just going to end up leaving small strips tend to them all.
if it’s in a pot I’ll kill it eventually…although I have got a massive hydrangea in one that I’ve had years.

sualipa · 03/06/2025 23:03

Always.

pestowithwalnuts · 03/06/2025 23:08

I had a boyfriend many years ago who's father insisted on having these either side of the front door..
3ft of snow and the only house in the street with flowering hydrangeas in the garden

PizzaSophiaLoren · 03/06/2025 23:09

Weeds are better than fake.

MoistVonL · 03/06/2025 23:14

They will look weird and fake, no one will ever think they are real plants. You might as well put a drawing up around your borders.

Save yourself the money and send them back.

TooBigForMyBoots · 03/06/2025 23:21

PizzaSophiaLoren · 03/06/2025 23:09

Weeds are better than fake.

I've gone down that route. But that's because I can't afford fake.😳

Anyway, it's OK in the front, but my back is just full of Calf's Foot(?) and nettles with a 7', white flowered thing that I'm going to have to cut down soon. It doesn't look great TBH. The nettles are dying and they’re the prettiest , most useful plant in my yard.😟

OrangeCrushes · 03/06/2025 23:21

Yes. Sorry.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 03/06/2025 23:23

One of my neighbours has fake flowers all over her garden and they look awful. Sorry OP. They’re a really bad idea. If you have some pots, why don’t you go and get some bedding plants? They’re really
easy to grow and look great all summer.
