Is ear piercing trendy for teen boys again?

DS has announced he is getting his ears pierced this afternoon. He is at uni and so it's up to him but I'm a bit surprised. Is it fashionable again?

I was a teen in the 80s so this is not something I've not seen before. My uni boyfriend had an ear pierced and he wore eyeliner but I wasn't expecting it from DS..

DS got his done about two years ago at 16. Not sure if it's particularly in as he does his own thing fashion wise, but he likes it.

NoVibrato · 03/06/2025 16:39

In the olden days (as you imply) the cool boys just got one ear pierced. (This encompasses both the 1980's and 1990's and the 16th century!)

@NoVibrato yep my DS has one done. Only stipulation I made was he went to a properly trained piercer and it was done by needle.

One of mine has both his done (now multiple times plus his eyebrow) most of his peers have both done, very few just have one. All done with a needle by a piercer.

In the olden days here @NoVibrato it depended upon which side you had pierced whether it was cool or (completely made up) meant something else entirely...

EffinMagicFairy · 03/06/2025 16:58

Pick your battles, you can take piercings out. Personally I’m more concerned about Tattoos at a young age, they aren’t my cup of tea anyway but if they’re going to get one/two, I would at least like them to really think about it before getting something they regret.

HelpMeGetThrough · 03/06/2025 17:28

Back in the “old days” wasn’t there a specific side that was pierced.

Late 70s , early 80s wasn't it some nonsense about if it was a particular side signified the person was gay.

That’s what I was thinking. Christ knows what side it was meant to be done.

He seems to be getting both done. And bleaching the tips of his hair blonde.

In the grand scheme of things it isn't a big deal but not exactly the look I expected him to go for given that he's trying to apply for jobs as a corporate lawyer..

I think back in the day having your right ear pierced was a signal that you were gay.

Apparently - according to the kids at my comp..

This look is definitely very popular among the teens and young 20s round where I live. Not sure of the ins and outs of whether it's trendy or not but I see it a lot.

My 8 year old nephew has the exact same as well!

lifemakeover · 03/06/2025 18:34

Yep - my DS and lots of his friends have both ears pierced (at least - often brows, noses, lips too)

I'm getting 'The Burning Red' era Rob Flynn vibes here. Thats not a bad thing btw!

Is anybody else, when seeing people with the nasal septum piercing, helplessly thinking of Mr. Lear's "The Owl and the Pussycat"--?
And there in a wood, a Piggywig stood,
With a ring at the end of his nose,
His nose,
With a ring at the end of his nose.

OhMyGiddyAunt · 03/06/2025 21:59

20nyr old DS has one ear and his nose pierced.

Seems to be the norm ...and not just for slightly "alternative types" either. In my day it was goths, hippies and grungy types

If he's old enough to be a corporate lawyer he's old enough to make his own decisions. Why does it bother you?

Seriously? I literally said in my posts that it wasn't a big deal. I was just asking whether it was trendy again.
