Smear Test After Colposcopy - Can Anyone Advise Please

Hi,

I had a 2 week referral to colposcopy in February this year after an exam (due to the odd bout of post sex and mid cycle bleeding) of the cervix showed inflammation.

Colposcopy procedure was fine - the gynae consultant said I had cervical erosion and didn’t think anything untoward but took a couple of biopsies, just in case.

Biospy results showed no pre cancerous or cancerous changes but did show viral changes. No information given as to what the virus was - I assume HPV but no details as to whether a nasty version.

So, I’m booked in for my routine smear on Weds and I’m unsure what to expect after. I know they only test for HPV at first now, so if that comes back positive still (assuming the viral changes in Feb were HPV) will it mean needing to go for another colposcopy again soon?

The letter I received from the hospital said if I had any questions to call. So I did. Three times (the first being back at the beginning of April). I asked what I should expect given I’ve had the recent colposcopy and they promised to call me back but they haven’t.

I just want to know what to expect really. I have health anxiety, although not too bad over this, but I also like to have things straight in my head. Chronic illness means planning things, including appointments, is often difficult, hence liking to know as much as I can in advance.

Can anyone advise at all please? Thank you.

Yes it will probably be positive again so expect to go back and they will check it with the dye

Hi, I’ve had multiple colposcopies. My first in my early 20s. After having those cells removed I had more regular smears than usual for a couple of years. Once you have a couple of ‘normal’ ones they usually put you back on the normal smear timeframe.

It’s almost like a follow up appointment smear.

If yours comes back abnormal again they’ll send you back to colposcopy, they’ll pop the lotion on to show up the cells. Like they did previously, probably a biopsy if anything shows.

You can request gas and air for the examination and anaesthetic if you want to.

Thank you both. That makes sense. At least I know the colposcopy wasn’t too bad either. I was looked after very well.
