Has anyone else given up wine because you just can’t metabolise it anymore?

F46 here. Have never been a big drinker anyway but last few years have been really weird - I would enjoy drinking the first glass but once it wears off, I would be tired and irritable all evening. Two glasses mean a guaranteed sleepless night and feeling worn out the next day. So, I just don’t bother anymore - no big quitting statements and occasionally work gets overwhelming, so I will have a glass for that hour of reprieve in the evening. About to go on holiday in June and quite jealous of all the hardcore drinkers, getting their moneys worth in all-inclusive pins coladas.

Just wondered if anyone else has been through the same and will it change back after peri?

Yep, 49 and exactly the same and I am known for liking a good drink. I actually ordered a pot of tea in a bar recently. I’ve become my grandma.

I fancied a drink of wine a few months ago a nice rosey. Had two big glasses in one night and was more or less destroyed the next day really hungover..second day I still had a headache. Am 45 and otherwise very healthy and fit. Pretty much never drinking wine again. And this wasn't on an empty stomach

Sadly it didn't go back to normal for me. Gin or vodka and tonic is ok though.

Yes, 46F and thought it was after such a long time without drinking much (pregnancies, BF, going out less). I've built up to where i can have a medium glass and barely feel it the next day!
One morning i woke up thinking "thats weird, i feel hungover". Saw a wine glass by the sink and remembered having a small glass before dinner!!

Palsaq · 23/05/2025 23:51

I don't sleep after drinking. I'll be awake till 4am at least. Not wired, just awake; I lie there listening to podcasts. It turns off my sleep somehow.

I don't even get drunk!

ijustneedaminute24 · 24/05/2025 00:00

I can’t drink much any more, in my thirties I could drink a bottle easily in a night and be fine the next morning. I even tried the breathalyser sticks and was ok.
Now I daren’t have one drink if I have to drive at all the next day, I wake up feeling so groggy and it takes most of the day to feel right again.

Sadly I still love a glass every few nights despite knowing how rubbish I’ll feel the next day. This isn’t a side of peri I thought I’d see!

Yes, I gave up wine 8 years ago for the same reason. I don't drink much but like a a G&T at the weekend. Lost weight which was a bonus.

Waitingfordoggo · 24/05/2025 00:17

I am 47 and stopped drinking wine about ten years ago. Even one glass would give me terrible heartburn and make me feel sleepy and miserable. I have never really drunk spirits so I will only drink beer or cider now and I only really fancy those on a warm summer afternoon so I have become a very infrequent, light drinker. I really did love my booze binges as a younger woman so I don’t think I ever imagined I’d end up almost teetotal but I don’t miss it. Just feels like a different phase of my life now and I’m into a new one. Like a PP, I’d order tea in a pub- LOVE my tea!

Lighttheflame · 24/05/2025 00:26

Yes same, f41. Sad!

if I want to drink I have to be super careful - be very hydrated, have eaten lots already, drink loads of water alongside the wine. Even then, my limit is one glass of wine! Anything more and I suffer terribly. Grumpy, tired, Sleeplessness, hungover for 2 days.

More and more I just feel it’s not worth it. DH doesn’t drink much luckily so we’re on the same page with it at least

HJBeans · 24/05/2025 00:31

Same here. Do any medically-knowledgable people know what causes this? Is my liver knackered? Is it hormones? Used to enjoy a drink at times and now can’t even have a glass with dinner without an almost immediate hangover. I don’t miss being drunk but miss a casual glass or two. I’m 49.

lurchermummy · 24/05/2025 00:32

Yep 58 and I barely drink, if I do it will be a cider or a beer, wine doesn’t agree with me anymore. I find it a bit sad sometimes then I remember how bad it is for you anyway.

VoltaireMittyDream · 24/05/2025 00:40

Yes, this hit me in my mid 40s. Even the thought of red wine gives me a migraine these days.

I still psychologically crave a glass of white wine of a summer evening, but I can’t make myself drink it.

The fact I still miss it tells me how much of a social lubricant / relaxation aid it had become.

Now I just have to sit with my feelings. 😬

TheOtherAgentJohnson · 24/05/2025 00:43

Yes, I stick to cocktails and spirits now, can't be doing with wine anymore. I can still drink beer (and love it), but have to go easy on it, because it's basically liquid bread.
