30-day declutterring challenge - Who wants to join me?

CarbonArtist · 22/05/2025 19:09

Fed up of living amongst piles of useless tat, thought I’d challenge myself to spend 30 days getting rid of as much of it as possible.

Would love to have some company if any of you would care to join me?

I’m thinking of officially starting on 1 June, but will do some pre-declutterring over the next couple of days.

Yes, I'll join you. So much to sort out.

Good luck to us!

CarbonArtist · 22/05/2025 19:43

Welcome aboard, @CalicoPusscat ! We will hopefully get some good support/accountability going on this thread.

Might make a start this evening actually, I’ve got a few things I could take out to the garage. Garage is becoming a dumping ground, but I don’t care as long as the shite is out of the house!!

I need to.get my finger out. House is on the market. Need to sell.

RobinHeartella · 22/05/2025 19:56

I'd like to join please, I'm so ashamed of how awful the house looks. It has so much potential to look nice.

Ellopal · 22/05/2025 20:01

Yes I’ll join. Hopefully will get time this weekend to start. I just need to be ruthless with it.

JoeTheDrummer · 22/05/2025 21:22

Come and join us on this thread! Lots of great inspiration and support….

Are you following anyone to do this?
I’ve signed up previously to the cas clutterbug one. But doing that in a group would be much more motivating.

She sends a daily email out with a focus.

CarbonArtist · 23/05/2025 08:41

Welcome everyone who has joined overnight.

@RobinHeartella I too feel huge shame about the state of my house, but also massive amounts of resentment that the burden of sorting it all out falls on me because I’m a woman. This shame/resentment combo seems to result in total inertia most of the time!!

Thanks @JoeTheDrummer for the link to the declutterring thread, will probably head on over once I’ve done my 30-day shock therapy.

@Pinkfluffypencilcase Is this the Clutterbug thing you did previously?

I might sign up for it so I can receive emails etc alongside this thread. Historically, I’ve not done well trying to follow cleaning and tidying programmes, because I’m very averse to the imposition of structure and routines. I’ll just take the bits I like from Clutterbug and then carry on in my own idiosyncratic way.

So… was thinking of tackling a kitchen drawer this afternoon. Anyone else planning to clear stuff out today?

I’d like to join really need to sort my house out

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 23/05/2025 11:57

Yes that’s the one! I found it after I’d started and realised I’d done the first 4 days by accident. What I should’ve done is repeated/ done another pass instead of having a break 🤦‍♀️

RobinHeartella · 24/05/2025 10:09

Me too! Dh has taken the kids out for two hours this morning and I've totally wasted the first hour lounging around. Right, this is it. I'm going to report back in one hour and so help me, I will have done something

Thanks for holding me accountable xx

RobinHeartella · 24/05/2025 10:40

Just checking in, it's been half an hour and I've revealed about two feet worth of space on the bedroom dresser - it was previously covered in random old bottles of cough mixture, body cream, wash bags I never unpacked from a holiday last October, phone charging cables etc. Now mostly cleared!

(I've also made the packed lunches for our day out later, and now I'm doing the washing up, and then dh and the kids will probably be back but I've done something so I'm pleased!)

Also, that was actually kind of fun because I was enjoying listening to the radio.

I reckon if I do 20 minutes everyday, maybe it'll look really nice eventually.

I feel like I'm on one of those weight loss threads, only it's my house that desperately needs to lose weight!

RobinHeartella · 24/05/2025 10:43

I've also decided paradoxically not to set myself goals or targets. Just, see a bit of mess, spontaneously clear it as I go along. Rather than set myself scary goals like "tidy up the utility room" eeek. I'll build up to that

SusanLittle76 · 24/05/2025 10:46

Love the idea of the '5 minute rule' just to reduce the magnitude of it down to manageable chunks. Good luck everyone and let the battle commence.

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 24/05/2025 12:50

Sometimes when o can’t get motivated I’ll go tidy in the adverts And try to get back before next bit. Sometimes rhats the kick start I need as I just continued then.

I have a lots of paperwork. But at least I’ve opened my post!

Well done! That sounds like a lot!

Hopefully that clear space will spread like fly lady says with her shiny sink principle.

i realise I read more about cleaning than doing it!

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 24/05/2025 12:52

Oh I'm in! My clutter is really getting me down.

CarbonArtist · 24/05/2025 18:01

Checking in, been very lazy today but I’m not being too hard on myself because I’m doing a night shift tonight so needed to rest. Might not update much tomorrow as I’ll be recovering from my night shift, but will hopefully get something done on Monday.

Managed to clear the kitchen table and declutter some old takeaway containers and paper bags from my kitchen drawer last night. Will try to do some more today.
