I’m a woman in a pub alone…

And feeling a bit conspicuous. I have travelled into a small city to meet a friend but because of train times and her work schedule I’ve got some waiting around to do.

I chose a Wetherspoons as it’s busy and I thought I would blend in. But I feel like I might as well have a flashing light attached to the top of my head!

I’m wondering if everyone’s thinking I’ve been stood up 🙈

I’m being ridiculous aren’t I?

Just carry on MNetting. Nobody really bothers.

Goingawayistricky · 16/05/2025 19:48

No, but the trick is not to give a rats arse.

My friend always suggested Spoons and was always late so totally I get how you feel.
I think it’s worse because there’s always a pissed contingent who have lost social awareness and just stare ( if you’re unlucky they might come over to be friendly)

Snoopywoopy123 · 16/05/2025 19:49

Oh god! Please don’t let anyone be friendly 😂

If it was a micro bar you'd probably have 5 new friends by now 😅 and I don't mean pervs.

Just chat to us you'll be alright.

Littletreefrog · 16/05/2025 19:50

Whatever the situation always remember for the most part nobody gives a shit.

AltitudeCheck · 16/05/2025 19:51

Are you actually being bothered by people or just feeling a bit awkward sitting on your own? If it's the former then headphones on, read the paper, do your best resting bitch face. So what if people speculate on who you might or might not be meeting? Presumably you don't know them and they won't give you more than a moment's thought.

SpicyMcSpice · 16/05/2025 19:51

I wouldn’t look twice at you in a Wetherspoons tbh!

And if I eventually thought you may have been stood up, I’d wonder why you agreed to go on a date there!

You’re in your own head, no one gives a shit what you’re doing. Order a drink and stare at your phone, that’s what most people do now anyways!

minnienono · 16/05/2025 19:52

I go into pubs alone, nobody bats an eyelid these days

If they do then it will most likely be some sad old drunk going from my own experience! Give him the daggers and he’ll soon piss off!

I've always done it. In the 80s I wouldn't stand at the town clock waiting for friends. I'd be in the first pub having a pint with the blokes.

Atarin · 16/05/2025 19:54

I would never pick a spoons for a start!!

I always get to the pub a good 30mins before meeting friends (often more if I can make it), I love a rare drink on my own. Especially when it’s sunny, sitting in a beer garden, sun on my face. Even in winter, a cosy seat by the fire with a good book. Embrace it! It sounds harsh, but I doubt anyone is paying you the least bit of attention, unless you are in some sort of fancy dress!

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 16/05/2025 19:58

I used to go away for work meetings/training and was alone in some nights in pubs. I just immersed myself in my phone, had no bother.

Snoopywoopy123 · 16/05/2025 20:00

Thank you everyone I’m clearly being silly!

This is quite a new thing for me.

I should do more of it, some exposure therapy lol

When I worked at a spoons sometimes when it was dead me and DP would make up backstories for all the customers in there, it makes a 10 hour shift go by a bit quicker. To be honest tho, people are probably paying you no mind. Most of the regulars are too busy talking the ears off the staff and most of the other people are just there to get pissed and vomit up the toilet wall.

mondaytosunday · 16/05/2025 20:25

You are v unreasonable to agree to a Wetherspoons!

Yerroblemom1923 · 16/05/2025 20:29

Don't overthink it. People don't care. I have no qualms about going into a pub on my own, unless it's v much a "local pub for local people" type place. 'Spoons is pretty generic. I've also gone for meals alone (not in 'Spoons) and the cinema. It's great and v liberating. I think what people forget is that most people are only really interested in their own lives to care enough about what others are up to.

loulouljh · 16/05/2025 20:31

People don't care. You are allowed to be there.
