Mini pill?

I am 43 and currently still on the combined pill. I recently went to renew my prescription and the doctor was telling me at this age they like women to swap to the mini pill. She said it has one hormone instead of 2 and instead of taking a week break you take it continuously. She said some women don’t bleed at all, some have a period as normal and some have random spotting.

What are folks experiences with this? I am reluctant to change. I don’t fancy the unpredictability of the bleeding!

What about libido, does it affect that in any way?

I was put on Cerazette by my GP and it was awful, I bled continuously, got raging acne and could quite happily have murdered everyone and anyone on a daily basis. I then tried Noriday which was much better but I think there are supply issues at the moment. I was taking it as part of my HRT but have had to swap to Utrogestan as the pharmacy couldn’t source any so I’m now back to being murderous.

i was given the mini pill when I was still bleeding 8 months post Partum (I also had the implant and pill was given to try to sort out the bleeding) I’m not sure if it was the mini pill or the combo of both but my mood absolutely tanked. I felt so low. I stopped taking it after 1 month !

I’m 43 this month and went onto the mini pill when I turned 40. Had the occasional bit of spotting but no period in years. It’s been great! I’m just on generic desogesterol.

Yea that’s one of my main worries, that it will affect my mood! I am on a combi pill that works so reluctant to change it

They started this pressure on me in my late forties. I would say if you are comfortable on your current pill stay on it. If you had masses of risk factors that would be another matter.

God knows. I had 3 implants before kids worked a dream no hassle. Then the one after pregnancy was horrendous! Anyway stopped the pill, implant removed and rapidly ended up a pregnant again !! Got sterilised that time round so problem solved lol

I went on it a few years ago after a minor clot in my leg (not DVT but thought it wise to change) and I wish I had done it years ago!! I maybe have a period every six months which is so light and lasts a max of two days.

SansaClegane · 21/05/2025 14:19

I was swapped to the mini pill about a year and a half ago due to risk factors.
I hate it so much.
Currently bleeding like a pig again and the last bleed was only 3 weeks ago. It's like a cycle, only more random so never exactly 4 weeks - can be 3, can be 5. Always comes on suddenly though, like from 0-100 with no warning signs.
I've tried 3 different mini pills so far and my GP keeps saying it's just the body getting used to it but wtf. I'm not sure how much longer I can last on this.
Any ideas or tips greatly appreciated 😳 which brand are you taking if you don't have any bleeds?!

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 21/05/2025 14:27

After being on the combined pill for 20 years I moved onto the mini pill when I was 40 and have been on it ever since - and haven't had a bleed since! I'm early 50s now and have been on HRT a few years, I don't have a mirena coil so I take the mini pill and utrogestan each night (continuous) and use estrogen patches. Works well for me.

No bleeding for me, I’ve been on the mini or progesterone only pill for over 20 years due to migraines, never had any issues
