Have you ever met your or close family's double?

I might normally mention this to DH or 2 close friends, but none of them feel appropriate due to circumstances, so thought it may make an interesting thread and get it off my chest at the same time.

My MIL passed away recently - it was all a bit of a shock and the fall out left behind has been uhm interesting.

This morning I was in a shop waiting for the lift and noticed someone approach to wait too, so glanced round to acknowledge them and she was the spitting image of my MIL.

I have no poker face whatsoever, so I'm sure my face was a picture, so smiled at her as we got in and just said, you look so much like my MIL, I did a double take...and off we went on our way. I feel a bit weird though - guess it hasn't sunk in properly although we've been through a few occasions now where we may have seen her such as Easter or Mother's day.

So, has anyone else seen their doppelganger or that of a close relative?

No, but my friend has some video footage from our teens of someone who looks like me but is behaving in such a way that I'm certain it can't be.

I've not met, but come across on the internet a few photos.

Close: A picture of a group of children in chorus at a panto from the 1930s. The end one looks very like one I have of dd1 also doing panto.

Very alike: A photo of a child from Warsaw Ghetto in the 1940s is very similar to how dd2 was at the same age, enough that it took my breath away when it came up. Fair curly hair and big blue eyes, but it was more that the face was so similar I couldn't stop looking at it.

Identical: Photo of someone selling newspapers, again in the 30s/40s is so alike my dbro I think I could persuade Mum it was him. It's not just the look, it's the way he's standing etc. I would be astonished if the chap in the photo wasn't related.
It's a very distinctive look and the way they stand; my brother has it, my uncle, my great uncle and a second cousin, although they're not identical facially.
On the subject of my second cousin, I have only met him 3-4 times, I think. Mostly as a child and the last time in a town neither of us live, and as he walked towards me I knew he had to be related, so stopped him and asked. I hadn't seen him for 20 years at that point.

I did just yesterday see someone that looked like DB who I know isn't in the country. Real awkward stare off as he was so similar.

Yours though, ghost probs. Whole situation is too perfect. (I'm half joking not really into that stuff but if this were a spooky movie then that would be her trying to hint at something in the uhm interesting situation.)

Not met but I've been shown a photo of someone who was apparently "my double" and even I had to agree she looked very much like me. I'd love to meet her and see if it was the same in the flesh.

Yes!!!

I have two

One i was accused of using a stolen bank card, as a teenager, they had cctv footage of me..
Well if i didnt know i 100% didnt do it i would of thought the woman was me.
It was so weird seeing the person on the CCTV, that was literally my twin

Then afew years ago, on Facebook, there were some photographs of a local night out and there was a Male version of me on there. Again soooo weird !!!

stressedandamess · 15/05/2025 19:12

No but my mum almost approached a woman who she thought was me 🤣🤣

shellyleppard · 15/05/2025 19:14

My DH & his doppelgänger came face to face in M&S about 30 years ago. They both recognised the likeness as they stopped and stared at each other for a minute.
I was so pissed off they didn’t speak to each other .
My doppelgänger is my sister , which probably doesn’t count.

I was told (by about 10 different people) that I look exactly like my old housemates ex girlfriend. Every time someone I'd not met would come round I had to brace myself for the same conversation!
I never met her or saw a picture of her so I've no idea if she really looked that much like me (this was pre social media days)

BlueOysterCultGroupie · 15/05/2025 19:36

Fascinating isn't it!

The aftermath has been family dramas, not anything spooky.

Neighbour looks and dresses identical to exDH, so much that we had a builder visit to do a quote, he was friends with said neighbour and at this point had not seen exDH, exDH came home for lunch and as he was walking up the drive builder was chatting to him thinking he was the friend/neighbour. It really is uncanny!

Separately there was a child who went missing a few years ago and again was incredibly similar looking to DS, my DB messaged me saying he’d seen the news and thought it was DS on first sight.
