Signed. Thanks so much for sharing. I have had this support and the machines in my hospital are height adjustable, but I will ask how accessible they are next time I go. Everyone deserves fully accessible treatment.

It's not really clear what's not accessible which puts me off signing. Is it the buildings? The equipment? The rooms? The car parks? The public transport?

SerendipityJane · 15/05/2025 15:27

You can add to that opticians and dentists. Good luck with that if you are wheelchair bound

I agree. It isn't remotely clear what is being asked for or what failings there are with current provision. I'd also be wondering why a man started the petition and what his knowledge is of breast and cervical cancer screeing for disabled women.

Just to be clear - I'm a disabled woman, so I would genuinely like clarity on what is being asked for and who by.

Equipment and training for transfers from wheelchair to therapy.

I am sure there will be wheelchair users who can tell us about at least one time when they turned up for an appointment only to be told that there was no way of getting them onto the bed. Bearing in mind the golden rule in the NHS is that the service user must adapt to the service or expect fuck all.

Of course the fact that while this is going on you have untold millions being spent on making sure you get peoples pronouns right whilst telling them they have to come back "another time".

I have accompanied wheelchair users to failed appointments on more than one occasion. As we all know every missed appointment costs the NHS a kings ransom. Which is one reason why I am in less of a rush to shower them with money than some.

If you plan on becoming disabled, make sure you have a partner who will stay fit and healthy until you are ready to die. Otherwise you'll forever be struggling to deal with modern life.

Being totally frank, any petition (government ones doubly so) are a waste of time. So you aren't missing much ....

I agree really. But equally, I still wouldn't sign something so poorly worded and would like to know why this is being promoted by a man. It seems an odd thing. I might sign something simply to register support if I thought it worthy of support even thouigh I know the government wouldn't listen.

BTW I do agree with you about access not always being good, and can definitely be improved. But as we know, "disability" is a huge bloody range of things - not even every "wheelchair user" will have the same experiences and limitations. It would be impossible to make every single facility accessible for everyone, hence it is important that when people ask for something they are clear about what they are asking.
