This thing was in my kitchen. It’s about the size of a fingernail. What the fuck is it and do I need to invest in some firelighters?

Looks like a moth

nordicwannabe · 10/05/2025 21:11

An image search suggests it's a 'masked hunter bug'. The nymphs camouflage themselves with dust.

Apparently they eat other insects rather than humans... so you should be OK!

TheAutumnCrow · 10/05/2025 21:13

It’s cute.

I like insects. I suspect I may be strange.

Had a google and it seems you are right, it looks like one of those. Hopefully this one is happy with its bug diet :/

camouflage themselves with dust.

I'm using that as an option excuse in future

I agree that it's cute! Fascinating behaviour.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 10/05/2025 21:18

It’s pretty cool

caramac04 · 10/05/2025 22:16

It’s fine.

NamechangeJunebaby · 10/05/2025 22:18

Dust? I thought it looked quite fluffy and furry - I have learned something new!

Wigtopia · 10/05/2025 22:25

Looks like it’s giving you the finger!! 😱

rightoguvnor · 10/05/2025 22:27

That’s a clever little bugger, camouflaging itself with dust, whoever would guess…
you haven’t got your banking passwords written down anywhere in the house? Cos that’s a clever little bugger.

RentalWoesNotFun · 10/05/2025 22:42

I love it. Wee fluffy leg warmers and all.

Oldandcobwebby · 10/05/2025 22:49

What a fabulous little creature!

That's not strange. The 'burn the house down' type joke/overreaction is strange.

I sometimes ponder about setting up a mobile business where I rescue insects and spiders from MNers' houses with my trusty nets and glass jars.

I'd release them all into my verdant garden, where they'd still have to fight for survival against garden birds, frogs and bats, but it would be better than being stomped on, gassed with spray or burnt to a crisp in a somewhat dramatic and frankly unnecessary house fire.

Gowlett · 11/05/2025 00:11

Urgh! No. I’m okay with spiders, but not this thing…

murasaki · 11/05/2025 00:19

What a weird looking thing.

If it's camouflaging itself with dust, which is pretty clever, I'd suggest dusting rather than cleansing fire.

CheeseDreamsTonight · 11/05/2025 00:32

I don’t think his disguise is working!

Fascinating, never seen one of these.
