Things people have said that stuck with you

Was recently chatting to a colleague - a lovely, kind, cheery woman who is always smiling. I asked her what her secret was, how she’s always so cheerful and upbeat. She shrugged and said ‘if you keep waking up and don’t love the thought of your plans, try something else!’

Honestly, it was such a simple statement (and obviously hugely unpractical in reality sometimes, haha) but she had a point!

Also reminds me of when my Nan gave up smoking after 50 odd years - I asked her how she’d managed it as it must be so tough after all that time, she just said ‘I just tell myself that I simply mustn’t have one, and that’s that’

Brilliant! What’s yours?

If you feel as if you hate everyone, eat something. If you feel as if everyone hates you, go to bed

At the start of a stressful day, telling yourself that no matter what happens in X amount of hours it will be over.

I always find ‘when someone shows you who they are, believe them’ to be helpful. I have a tendency to expect the best of people

I like that one - seems to make the day more tolerable!

I don't have one but I love all of these! Very simple but powerful.

When I was in sixth form one of my classmates died, at his funeral his dad spoke about his son’s ashes being buried under a tree and how “James would love turning into a tree”.

I found it so beautiful! Like you don’t have to believe in god or heaven, it’s amazing that we exist at all, life continues and we can get turned into a tree.

A bit niche but a friend once said to me "friends don't let friends climb slabs" when we were on a climbing holiday. I always hear his voice saying this whenever I attempt to climb a slab and it puts me off every time😂

Advice I first heard here: don’t take criticism from someone whom you wouldn’t go to for advice.

I was told to try not to be shit, as if you’re trying quite hard not to be shit you’ll probably end up pretty good. Not exactly eloquent, but I feel like it works well for most areas of life 😂

It's 7 years today since my best friend died of bowel cancer aged 46, whenever anyone complains about getting old I always remind them that it's better than the alternative.

I also like "worrying never changed anything" which my grandfather used to say and he's right

lucya66 · 09/05/2025 22:15

I read it in a book, but it stayed with me: everything can change, but only with abandon.

A safari guide in South Africa - home should be the place you most want to be, if it's not, fix it

'Be kind to the people you meet on the way up, you'll meet them again on the way down' always stays with me.

No amount of money is worth yours or your children's mental health. Spoken about divorce settlements but worthy in many situations

Couple of sayings I’ve heard over the years .. really should live by them!

Comfort zones are beautiful places, but nothing ever grows there.

And ..

What you tolerate today becomes your reality tomorrow.

If you want to have a friend you have to be one. And
putting your wants before someone else’s needs is selfish; putting your needs before someone else’s wants is self care.

My grandma used to say .... "the wearer the carer and bugger the starer".

A friend once said "If you wait until you can afford children you will never have them" ... I got pregnant shortly after as I realised it was absolutely true.

you will be hard on others

Never give up on a dream just because of the time it will take to accomplish it. The time will pass anyway.
