Nobody writes lyrics like Brandi Carlisle. This was the first time I'd ever heard one of her songs and I immediately had to track down everything she'd ever written.

Mythical Kings and Iguanas, by Dory Previn. Not actually a band I know very well, but this song seemed to sum up my difficulties in getting to grips with life so well that I memorised it. It has a lovely melodic tune too.

First time I ever heard it, it was like my hair stood on end on my arms. It resonates so much for me on my relationship with my mother, who was mentally abusive and who I've had nothing to do with in over 25 years now. Especially the bit about thinking of was something I'd done, and the reading into every word you say bit. She could twist words like a knife, and was so calculated I was petrified when she was nice.

My daughter sent me a text last night from a night out in her college town where she has moved to permanently since graduating. I hate her being so far away, but last night she told me Summer of ‘69 had just come on. She knows I love it even though it’s so cheesy because I was born in the summer of ‘69

She said ‘ I love it when he sings those were the best days of my life’ because I really think these are. I got quite choked, I’m so happy that she’s so happy.
