Comedy show - Russell Kane or Frankie Boyle?

oldernotwiserffs · 03/05/2025 12:57

I love live comedy and used to watch a lot of stuff like 8 Out of 10 Cats, Mock the Week, Have I got News for You etc and go to see comedians fairly regularly when they were visiting my town. For one reason or another I have got out of the habit and I am not sure who is good these days. I have been offered tickets to a comedy show and there are two nights - one night Russell Kane is headlining, the other it is Frankie Boyle. I don't know much about Russell Kane; I remember Frankie Boyle's style being fairly offensive back in the day. If you were me which one would you choose and why?

Frankie Boyle is brilliant of you are aren't easily offended. He's very near the knuckle

He's just not funny anymore.

PicklesMacGraw · 03/05/2025 17:52

I go and see lots of live comedy and I’m really hard to offend but I find Frankie Boyle unpleasant and offensive. I really dislike him. I haven’t seen Russel Kane so not sure about him.

I find some comedians who are great on tv shows just can’t manage a whole show.

I saw Ricky Gervaise recently and was suprised at how not funny he was. It was like he was going through a list of everything offensive. Very boring and unoriginal

You're kidding? We saw him last year, exactly the same thing happened!
Worst gig ever, and I've had to sit through Tim Vine's one liners 🙄

Wow, he hasn't improved in 20 years then. I'm surprised Boyle is still doing stand-up, he didn't seem to enjoy and and he wasn't very good at it. I've seem some comedians play their audience like a fiddle. Boyle didn't even seem to like his audience.

Thanks everyone, I think I might give it a miss having read all your responses! It’s disappointing because I do miss going to comedy shows and it would have been something different to do but none of you are selling either Frankie or Russell to me!

Who are the other acts?

Maybe it's not about the headliners this time.

@NuffSaidSamthere are a couple I’ve seen before but not really heard of most of them

Who else is on the billing? I’d go anyway to discover someone new! On Russell Kane’s night..

So tell us who they are and we can tell you if they're any good.

Andrew Maxwell
Jamali Maddix
Thor Stenhaug
Chloe Petts

Please?

I saw Chloe Petts supporting Ed Gamble and she was mildly amusing. But not sure how Mumsnet would find her as she may do stuff on gender.

CheeseWisely · 04/05/2025 21:49

I’ve seen Russell Kane 4 times over the years, first time being in the back room of a pub before he made it big, last time at the end of last year. He is absolutely brilliant live and puts so much effort into researching the area he’s appearing in and what will be locally funny there (although I don’t especially like his social media persona). Don’t get me wrong he can walk the line of offensive too but not in the same way as Boyle, who’d I’d rather spoon out my eyeballs than watch live.

CarpetKnees · 04/05/2025 22:28

Original question - anyone EXCEPT Frankie Boyle.

New question - Rachel Parris is good. I'm afraid I don't know the others.

mindingmyown37 · 04/05/2025 22:32

Russell Kane, absolutely love him…

Costacoffeeplease · 04/05/2025 22:55

I agree re Rachel Parris

Rachel Parris, Celya AB, Josh Pugh, Andrew Maxwell and Jamali Maddox are all worth a watch.

Chloe Petts is not for me.

I don't know Thor Stenhaug.

Out of all of these names Russell Kane is the.one I'd want to watch least, followed by Chloe Petts and then Frankie Boyle. I'd use a free ticket to go and see the others though.

FightingFish · 04/05/2025 23:18

I would just go with the one whose energy level/delivery suits you more. I like RK on Evil Genius because it restrains him a bit but I personally wouldn’t want to watch someone that high energy/manic on stage, I find it really off putting. That’s why I never understood why Lee Evans was so well liked back in the day, him running around, talking 10 to the dozen and sweating everywhere was horrible to see.

NonComm · 04/05/2025 23:35

Russell Kane is very funny - especially when he talks about his background. The Evil Genius podcasts make me laugh out loud.

Frankie Boyle. I find Russell intensely irritating.

He's just all floppy.

CigarettesAndLoveBites · 05/05/2025 21:40

Russell Kane any day of the week, he’s brilliant and a ball of energy. I’ll have the tickets if you chose Frankie Boyle 😆

NeedWineNow · 05/05/2025 21:58

I wouldn’t see either of them live but I do like Russell Kane’s Evil Genius podcast.

I have never liked Frankie Boyle. Always thought he was vile to be honest.

LivelyMintViper · 05/05/2025 22:04

I saw Boyle on Mock the Week and thought him Hilarious. My son went to one of his shows and left half way through. He was very crass and unfunny. Maybe he needs some censorship to make him tune his material

CurlewKate · 05/05/2025 22:20

I would choose Russell Kane because I would NEVER give money to Frankie Boyle.

Proudmummy67 · 05/05/2025 22:37

I've never forgiven Boyle for refusing to apologise for his Harvey Price joke. I'm not saying I'm a Katie Price fan but I just thought it was well too far to joke about a disabled child and then stand your ground on it.

APurpleSquirrel · 05/05/2025 23:02

ive seen Russell Kane several times & his shows are very funny, very intense & high energy & my face ached from laughing so much.

As OPs say - liked Frankie Boyle on Mock the Week etc & went to see him live (probably about 15 years ago). Absolutely awful - hardly laughed, really offensive & I’ve never watched him on tv or live since. Jokes about kids with Downs Syndrome was just abhorrent.

So in your shoes I’d go see RK, or try one of the new ones.
