Practical thread for anyone who needs to sort out their house and their diet

I’d love some company.
I feel motivated when I know I’m not doing stuff on my own. Caring for a relative with dementia, working and family life has left me in a bit of a mess.
I need to tidy up, declutter and do some diy.
I also need to lose some weight.
Im thinking of 6 weeks of intermittent fasting and healthy eating and spending time focussed on sorting out the house.
If you’re in a bit of a rut too and fancy this, then I hope you’ll come and join.
Think of where we could be in mid June!

I'll join. I got a bollocking from my GP about my diet as it sent my BS into the hundreds. I'm working on it. Today hasn't been good though, mainly because I woke up at 3 am with a burning nose, thanks hay fever.

I had water with my half pizza tonight instead of wine. We were on holiday last week and certainly drank too much.

I'm in, I desperately need to do this.
I'm recovering from surgery and will be starting chemotherapy shortly, but I'm drowning in crap at home and it's not helping my mental health, I just want to feel calm at home and all I can see everyday is "stuff"
Every single room, cupboard, drawer is full, I can make things look tidy of someone comes round-by flinging everything into my bedroom and making excuses for people to not go upstairs.Im sick and tired of living like this, it had been an accumulation of years of not decluttering because the house has so much integrated storage that its been easy to just put it in a cupboard as well as both working full time with young children and being exhausted and not prioritising decluttering.
Now I'm not well it has become obvious we need to sort it. I don't find any joy or "therapy" in cleaning or tidying,Ive been watching influencers that do in the hope it might inspire me, but it hasn't and just makes me feel even more shit about my house.
I do love a list, so I thought maybe if I spent some time and wrote out a full list of everything that needs decluttering for example
Kitchen
-pantry cupboard
-fridge
-freezer
-6 x drawers
-6 X cabinets
-chest of drawers
-full length cupboard
-open shelves
-surfaces
Tick of each individual item as I do it, so the task is relatively small but I would get a sense of achievement if I saw that full list crossed off.
I'd love others thoughts on that

Sorry to hear about health issues.
I’m really struggling today due to caring duties but I also managed a nice walk, my vitamins and some healthy meals. Not in calories deficit though! I had roasted veg, smoothie, ryvita and cheese and curry and rice.
House related stuff did not get done! Managed some laundry and some surface level cleaning.

Oh my goodness! Yes! I'm craving crap all the time and my house is so bitty! I start diy and decluttering but then get bored and move onto the next thing. Literally nothing is finished.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 03/05/2025 20:26

Oh I’m totally here for this! I’m really trying on both counts but my weight loss is super slow and every time I knock something off the house list, I add something new on the bottom.

nzeire · 03/05/2025 20:55

when I’m overwhelmed like this I do one drawer / cupboard a day. Tip it out, spray and wipe, put all you need back in super tidy and buff the rest.
one area is manageable, and so satisfying.

JewelInTheTiara · 04/05/2025 12:11

Focus is on healthy eating today! I’m also going to clean bathrooms.

My plan today is:
food- aim for more protein, more veg, drink some water
exercise- I ran 11km on a hilly route this morning
house- vacuum all the downstairs, and do a big put away of all the bits that have been left lying around. Put 10 items onto vinted and maybe more if I get into the swing of it

Not a great weekend in terms of decluttering, I've felt so tired, I've just slept when I needed to and not worried about doing anything extra.
Feel much better today, cleared up in the kitchen, sorted loads of recycling, went through a huge pile of clean washing and managed to get 2 carrier bags set aside for the charity shop.
Plans for rest of today

  • get as much washing done and put away as possible
-clear clutter from kitchen worktop -start working through kitchen drawers -bring down 4 bags of clothes from bedroom for charity shop, want to take these tomorrow

I was recommended the rule of 13 - every time you can face it, walk around and pick up 13 things to get rid of.
These can be 13 things to take outside to the bin, or 13 charity shop things, or 13 Vinted listings. If I'm trying really hard, I even combine the bubble baths into a single 'potion' and top up the cotton buds and unwrap the loo rolls - it all counts!!!
