Is there a thread for local election results watchers?

IDK if I’m just useless with this app or there isn’t a dedicated thread yet.

Ive only just braced myself to turn the coverage on, though, so maybe everyone is being similarly avoidant?

Nobody? I’d expect there to be a thread near the top of Active or Trending.

Grim mood in Grimsby.

Okay, either I’ve gone scroll-blind or it really is just me. Weird.

Hi @BottleBlondeMachiavelli still up and just remembered about the results. Just put the news on. Do you think it will be a slow night as no results are in yet.

Interested in this thread?

Hey! Nice to see you. I think it’ll all speed up after 2am and I suspect it’s going to be dramatic looking at these early results. Which side are you on?

Sky News are currently describing modelling saying Right wingers are switching to Reform and left wingers are defecting to the Greens.

I suspect your right after 2am things should start moving along. After the past few years not on any political side. In saying that I do hope Labour gets a shock and maybe Kier will learn to up his game. I can dream. I think Reform will do well tonight, they have been campaigning hard for the votes.

BottleBlondeMachiavelli · 02/05/2025 01:59

I’m pretty much politically homeless myself. I can get behind the Greens having more seats, though.

It’s definitely interesting times. Unusual to have no MN interest in an election though, even though it’s isn’t a GE.

I read that quite a few places won't start counting until tomorrow.

Thegirlinthegreenscarf · 02/05/2025 02:01

I came on looking for a thread and couldn't find anything. I was about to give up and I found you. Not like mn at all.

The by election count has started and the Lincs ones will be interesting re Reform.

The Guardian has this summary;

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2025/may/01/polls-close-local-mayoral-elections-england-runcorn-helsby-byelection

I know some are coming in. I think North Tyneside mayoral result is imminent. Following via BBC.

BottleBlondeMachiavelli · 02/05/2025 02:09

I’ve got to stop channel hopping. It might be easier to follow if I pick one. 😁

These early ward results - I know they’re tiny in the larger scheme of things - but they’re very strong for Reform.

I'm not overly surprised tbh - I suspect they are indicative of overall end result.

Thegirlinthegreenscarf · 02/05/2025 02:17

I find the by elections really interesting because they set the tone for the next general election. Both in front of the scenes and behind the scenes in all parties involved.

Does anyone know what the polls are predicting?

BottleBlondeMachiavelli · 02/05/2025 02:19

Hmm. It feels a bit like every election since the Brexit Ref, or maybe the euro elections before that, have all been big protest votes - locals, general, referendum, mayoral, everything. I wonder how many more before the main parties get a grip and respond appropriately?

I think we’ve got years of churn to look forward to.

A Reform swing is predicted and so far looks accurate. They're so far saying a surge to the Greens for the left and Reform for the right and not a great turnout overall

I worked a polling station in rural Leics, quite a large constituency but we only had 25 people turnout

A lot of results won't be revealed until later this morning

I couldn’t work out what the Sky models I mentioned were based on. Maybe some polls plus early ward results? I turned over at just the wrong time. But that was landslide territory. Do they do exit polls on the mayorals?

Tyneside is close! Labour hold, though.

Yesterday Guardian was predicting that tactical voting would dampen Reform’s efforts. I think they were probably wrong.

Staffordshire Tamworth area all 5 seats won by Reform UK. Also leader of Staffordshire council post her seat to another Reform UK candidate. DH just got back from count.

A lot of people in rural areas do the postal vote.

Yes, low turnouts sound like a theme.

I didn’t realise some results aren’t expected until as late as 6pm. Ours is pencilled for quite late in the day.

Do they have commentators from a range of parties or are they pro-reform?
