Temp car insurance for foreign resident visitor

My brother is visiting from the US where he lives for a few weeks and I want to lend him my car. Has anyone done this and navigated temporary insurance? I've tried a few places and it asked for a UK postcode but obviously he doesn't have one. I don't know whether to use mine but that feels wrong and I don't want to mess around with insurance cover.

You should be able to add him as a temporary driver to your own policy. I do this two or three times a year for a family member that visits. Just phone up or go online to your policy and click “make a change”.

I've tried this. They only allow me to add her for the whole year at great expense.

My insurance lets me add ‘named drivers’, is that not an option?

@WhatNoPeas

is this site useful?

The last time we did this it was about £10.

When my sibling comes to stay, I add them onto my policy for the duration. They need to have a current license which is recognised by UK authorities.

We had this with brother who was visiting from Australia - We contacted our existing insurer and tried to add him but they wanted an extra £300+ just for him to be on the insurance for 3 months.

We found that it was easier to cancel the existing insurance policy and go to another company and take out a new annual policy with him as one of the named drivers. Cost was only slightly more expensive than if it was just us as normal. Brother was here for three months so it was worth it - probably not if he had only been here for weeks
