Dehli for work

TourangaLeila · 25/04/2025 19:18

I have the very exciting opportunity to visit Delhi for 7 weeks on a work trip.

I'm looking for all the tips!

How do i avoid dehli belly?

Places to go on a weekend

Where should I look to stay? (work will be paying but I can search for hotels and see what they have on our booking systems)

What foods should I try?

How does the transport and such work?

Oh and what should I take! Clothes and supplies wise?

OK, so talk to me about toilets. Someone mentioned to me that if I needed to go when out and about that I'll be having to free wee!

They have squat toilets in some places although most place offer a western toilet option. However you might be glad to squat rather than tough the seat! Probably most of an issue when out sightseeing and using public toilets. Otherwise the majority of restaurants bars etc have western toilets now.

Fine with squat toilets as long as there ARE toilets. My friend made it sound like everyone just goes where they stand! 😳

Which is very ignorant of her hut did make me panic a bit.

Are you still going with the current situation OP @TourangaLeila ? DH is out there at the moment and I’m trying to be rational that it’s miles away from the conflict but I think his work are being very irresponsible not packing them up onto the next flight!

Think the government has banned travel within 10 miles of the India /Pakistan border

I’m from Delhi. My whole family lives there. No need to panic.

freespirit333 · 08/05/2025 20:32

@Usernamerequired09 thank you for your message that’s very kind to reassure me. I hope your family ok. I feel very on eggshells about DH being out there and no sign of them being sent home.

No plans to change anything currently. Thought we are watching closely not due to fly out until the 28th.

The timing is a bit unfortunate. One of the worst times of year to go tbh. You might need to plan not to do too much in the hottest part of the day.

I've been to Delhi and other parts of India more times than I can count over the last 25 years (DH is from India) and I have never once had sickness or diarrhoea. We are very careful about only drinking bottled water, and we are fussy about the brand...we tend to go for Catch or Himalaya, DH doesn't trust Bisleri. And of course, avoid ice in drinks etc.

We are not overly fussy about what we eat but we are vegetarian so I think that probably helps. I have taken risks with stuff like ice cream and salad if I trust the venue... tend to avoid if not so sure.

It's an amazing, fascinating and crazy country that will assault your senses and blow your mind. You'll either love it or hate it...I don't think there is much space for reactions in between. I think it's great!

Another vote for Bukhara in the ITC hotel - their black daal is famous!
