M&S ‘cyber Incident’

Hi,
not sure what is going with M&S. Firstly, last week they were wrongly advertising 15% off everything but when you got to checkout it didn’t go through and just called it a ‘glitch’. Then, I went into store on Monday and while queuing at checkout I heard the cashier explain that all their tills were offline and they were unable to honour any sparks online offers. As I had a 20% off voucher for some trousers, I decided to wait and order them online instead, thinking it was just a problem with my local store.
I placed an order online on Wednesday for 3 items, my money was debited from my card as usual and I was sent an email with order details saying my items would be ready to collect in storeon Saturday - all good.
As I’m checking my order this morning, I see the items haven’t even been despatched yet. Then this afternoon, I see the following message on the website ( I was unaware of this and wonder why, if they knew this on Tuesday, did they take my money for my order on Wednesday?)
I also realise, I cancelled another order last week and I’ve yet to receive a refund ( usually get them within 48hrs)

I've seen apologies all over x and Facebook from the CEO

What I don't get is WHY is this attack on M and S so bad?

When other stores/banks have been hit its usually sorted in a few hours or at most a day or so

This M and S attack has been a WEEK now! What the fuck is going on ?

Scattered spider effectively takes control of the companies network without the encryption key it is virtually impossible to get access back without paying the ransom. M&S either revert to backups from before the attack or have to rebuild their systems or pay the ransom. Whilst these are teen-agers they are extremely clever

I've just heard that Scattered Spider (teens) attacked M and S 😬😳

I saw that suggested in the DM, has it been confirmed now?
I was surprised that a group of teens would have even heard of M and S 😁

I'm not sure about 'confirmed' but it was on LBC (Nick Ferrari) this morning.....so Grin

Well I have now had everything refunded (in four transactions but it adds up to my order total).

Hope M&S can get up and running again soon.

Has anyone noticed if there have been any M&S stock issues with Ocado?
I regularly buy M&S products in my weekly order and so far haven't seen any problems.

piscofrisco · 30/04/2025 11:15

I wish they would hurry up and fix it. I was expecting a skirt which I ordered on Saturday to wear to an event on Sunday and they don’t have it in my size (or can’t check they do) in my local M and S. And I really want it!! (I’m sure the IT people at M and S will redouble their efforts now they know this 😂😂).

M&S did say that some stock issues would also affect Ocado, yes.

2 of our nearby stores are almost out of jam. DS2 is gutted!

Just received the refund for my order. Very quick as only had email yesterday to say order was cancelled. They also sorted out another problem I had with a previous refund ( from about a week before all this started). 👏

I've literally just had mine too from April 8th. So pleased!

It’s not looking much better in the biscuit area.

Don't be ridiculous, it's not something that you can hide with a NDA if it's an attack like M&S has

Read the BBC news tonight. Remember where and when you heard it first

If it's on the national news how is there an NDA?

Oh dear. Thankfully none of those items are on his lengthy list of things he insists on checking on a regular basis 😂

There is a small bit about the Co op but it's not worse than M&S.

Who said that, the Co op? They are going to put their spin on it. I hear differently but it is a different sort of retailer.

Depends who put the story out. The Co op will want to control the narrative rather than let the staff versions come out

Scattered spider are a bunch of teens?

Their parents must be so proud.

They are not all teens, it's believed it's a gang of about 1000 cyber criminals some as young as 16. They are extremely clever hackers and very dangerous.

In a few years time they maybe employed as IT security experts by Banks, companies or government. These areas want their security tested. It's a never ending threat sadly. Or the hackers will be on jail or perhaps teaching the subject

Not sure what to do about my order. I received some, but not all, of the items that I ordered. Went online to check when the missing were being dispatched, only to find that my entire order has been cancelled and refunded. Fine, but because the order is cancelled there is now no way for me to return items already received.

Feel a bit sorry for M&S as they are probably going to lose a lot of money over this.

Yorkshiremum80 · 01/05/2025 06:55

They reckon they will be losing about 3 million a day, they've had 700 million wiped off their share price.

That is really bad. I hope it doesn’t cause them to go under. I wonder whether prices will go up to try and make up the losses.

Feel kinda bad that I now have a load of items that I’ve not paid for and can’t return.

Cantonet · 01/05/2025 12:45

I am actually starting to feel incredibly sorry for M&S.
The May bank holiday weekend is peak shopping time.
It doesn't look like they will be up & running any time soon. I wonder whether they are insured for incidences like this?

Gonegrey31 · 01/05/2025 12:54

You can return items - I did so this morning for both an online order and a store purchase. Online order was placed on the first day of the problem, and yet still came to my local store a couple of days later.
Both refunds went through to my M&S card immediately.

My order was placed on Wednesday. I received some of the items but not all. However the whole order has been cancelled and refunded (including refunds for the items already sent). I don’t need a refund because it’s already been refunded, but there is no option to return the items that I was refunded for.

I suppose that M&S have done this because they can’t complete the order or process all the returns, but it will be a huge loss of stock for them.

Yes I also wondered whether they would have some kind or insurance against this.
