Ghost stories in theatre

Hi, me and a friend have tickets to see ghost stories in theatre this weekend, has anyone seen it?
Had a look on YouTube but didn’t see much about it only people’s reactions and saying how scary it was.
Did anyone actually find it scary?

I saw it a few times on its original run. Yes it’s scary - both the content and the staging, which has some good jump scares in it!

It’s not gory horrible horror, though. If you can watch things like Inside Number 9, you’ll enjoy it.

Oooh - lucky you! I would love to see this in the theatre. It’s something that will stay in your head rather than make you jump out of your skin.

I’ve seen it - it’s very loud 😂

Mortimermay · 23/04/2025 21:04

I was a bit disappointed but I think it may have been due to the audience. The story itself is great but I only had one real jump scare. Sadly though there was one person in the audience who kept screaming really loudly at nothing all the way through. It was so bad that then people around her would then start giggling and at one point someone over the other side of the theatre actually hissed at her to stop it. It meant that just as I was starting to get drawn into a story and the atmosphere was building, it was then ruined by the over the top scream and giggling. There were others there who felt the same. Overall though I didn't find it anywhere near as scary as it was advertised to be and was a little bit disappointed with it but it had a good storyline.

That sounds so annoying, I hate it when people ruin it for others. Really hope that doesn’t happen when I go to see it 😂 the last scary thing I went to see was the woman in black and I’ve seen the exorcist live but can’t remember feeling scared for that one

Yeah it was very annoying! But if you have a good audience, I think it will be a great show. Its a bit different, the acting was great and it was a good storyline. I hope you enjoy it! There were definitely some jump scares. One in particular, you'll know it when it happens 🤣

ClassicStripe · 23/04/2025 21:29

We saw it last week. I’m a big wimp so I found it very scary. It was also unsettling and I have been thinking about it all week. I didn’t sleep a wink the night I saw it.

EmeraldRoulette · 23/04/2025 21:34

It's very scary

I saw it years ago but one thing I've learned since then is that loud noises actually annoy me and distract me from more important things. I found that I enjoy ghost story type things more if I put ear loops in!

So, I don't want to spoil anything here but if loud noises bug you that might be a tactic you want to use. It probably has changed a lot though.

It is incredibly clever. It's not all about the jump scares at all. And some of the most scary moments are also the moments that will get in your head for other reasons.

I was awake till about 4 am after seeing it.

Did you find the Woman in Black scary? I've seen it three times. As you do 😂 but that's like three times in 30 years or something.

PS I hope you'll come back and tell us about it. I did suggest to another person that they do a spoiler thread in the "culture vultures" section because I love talking about this stuff 😊

Boredofbeinganadult · 23/04/2025 21:45

That’s good to know! I don’t think loud noises annoy me. Haha I’m glad you enjoyed it, we are seeing at 8pm so it it’ll be dark when we get out 😂 I saw the woman in black about 10 years ago, I can’t remember if I found it scary or not, I probably did but i remember enjoying it. I’m going to see 2.22 a ghost story next year so you can tell I like scary things haha

I’ve seen it and enjoyed it, I wouldn’t call it scary but I’m the sort of person that can watch The Exorcist alone and sleep easy.

EmeraldRoulette · 23/04/2025 21:51

@Boredofbeinganadult 222 is really good as well

Not so overtly scary although the person I went with jumped up twice 😂

@Boredofbeinganadult I only remember Laura Whitmore but the other lady was unwell and we had the understudy.

They were all excellent.

EmeraldRoulette · 23/04/2025 22:32

@Boredofbeinganadult btw have you seen Inside No 9 - on stage?

SoScarletItWas · 24/04/2025 07:21

I saw 2.22 on press night (didn’t know it was when I booked it 30 mins before curtain). It was the cast with Draco Malfoy, as the lady in the stalls informed us all in a loud whisper when he first appeared 🤭

Stephen Fry was sitting just along from me 🤩

I enjoyed it but it was a bit predictable and not scary.

AndresyFiorella · 10/09/2025 22:56

Just found this thread and hoping to find some of you again! Would you say this is suitable for a class of Yr11s students (age 15-16), or is it too scary? I booked tickets without looking too much into it and now I'm terrified I'm going to traumatise my students!

SoScarletItWas · 11/09/2025 05:26

@AndresyFiorella theyll be fine. You could have a discussion beforehand and afterwards about stagecraft and the techniques writers use to create different emotions including fear. How did these techniques work to prompt reactions in them during the show?

That will create a bit of distance for anyone who was proper scared! But I think they’ll be fine, especially if they watch horror films anyway.

AndresyFiorella · 11/09/2025 06:18

Thank you. I'm even scared myself- I hate horror films! I don't know what I was thinking when I booked it! I think I thought it was on a level with The Woman in Black but it seems it's on another level.
