There's a few threads that I've started reading but have then come away from because I don't want to stay in a room with racists who aren't going to change their views no matter what I say. I don't know if that's the right attitude or whether letting them spew vile unchallenged is the wrong thing to do.
It's so disheartening to see that opinions, that a few years ago people would have kept quiet about and be embarrassed to express, are now being spouted openly. It scares me that even quite sensible, measured people have pushed to the right, and those who were already on the right are now pushing even further to the extreme right. DH said to me this week that he thinks that people trying to set fire to hotels where asylum seekers were living was this country taking a step towards ethnic cleansing. That's a very depressing thought.
