Gretna Green - tacky or romantic?

I’ll start this by saying I’m not planning to get married, but this leads from a conversation I had at work. I have always thought of Gretna Green as being a lovely, romantic place to get married. I said as much at work and two people said they thought it was the height of tackiness…one even said to them it was on a par with Blackpool! (Mind you, I love a weeknd in Blackpool!) So, I guess I’m asking what you think, and what your experience is? All for the sake of nosiness 😁

We got marriage there with a few very close friends and family members and had a great time, our wedding was very relaxed and the people who came all said because of how informal the wedding was it was the best wedding they had been to ( they could obviously say that about every wedding they have been to)

We don’t regret getting married at Gretna and for us it definitely wasn’t tacky ( we think big weddings are) ourselves, our friends and family all made a short weekend break out of it, we stayed in the Lakes ( just over an hour away if I remember correctly ) for two days before we got married and our friends and family did similar but to various other places, all in all we had a great long weekend and got married on the Sunday afternoon.
There was absolutely no stress whatsoever, no family arguments and as it was a 4 hour drive people who truly loved us and whom we loved wanted to do the drive and be there with us but again we would have completely understood if they couldn’t come because of the distance.

If you don’t mind being part of a production line where newly weds are churned out every thirty mins whilst coach trips sit a few feet away eating frozen chips at aluminium cafe tables then go for it. It’s not romantic in the least.

Tacky.

Two couples I know have got married at Gretna Green in the last year - from the pictures they both looked like really lovely ceremonies and they all looked very happy with it.
