Ok, so the song "babe" by Styxx, I always believed was Billie Joel?
I always hear it on smooth radio and it wasn't until the DJ said that was "Styx".

It's sounds so Billy Joely though? After all this time! I'm 38 so it's slightly before my time.

Another one comes to mind - "a good heart" by Fergal Sharkey, I actually thought was Rod Stewart and then Madonna singing the chorus.

Anyone else had a song they have heard for years and it wasn't who they thought?

Lonely this Christmas by Mud - I thought it was Elvis

ICriedAllTheWayToTheChipShop · 18/04/2025 09:55

Echo Beach is definitely by Blondie and not Martha and The Muffins... and I only found out recently that The Rhythm of the Night is by DeBarge and not Gloria Estefan.

Have you got Lonely this Christmas confused with Blue Christmas? Similar tempo and always on Christmas compilations.

PomegranateVase · 20/04/2025 00:09

I thought Smooth Like Butter was by Bruno Mars - but it’s by BTS.

ImDuranDuran · 20/04/2025 04:54

Lido Shuffle…I’m actually convinced I’ve seen Elton John perform this let alone be the artist on it.

Ikeatears · 20/04/2025 12:49

@mewkinsno I don’t think so! I played it for dh and he named Elvis too. Disclaimer: neither of us are particularly Elvis fans…

cheapskatemum · 20/04/2025 13:31

The late Les Gray, lead singer of Mud at the time “Lonely this Christmas” was a #1 hit, would have been overjoyed. He was a die hard Elvis fan.

AllPlayedOut · 20/04/2025 13:41

It seems that a lot of people think that Elvis sang Lonely This Christmas because I started typing it into Youtube and it suggested Lonely This Christmas by Elvis Presley.

Tooty78 · 20/04/2025 13:44

Keeping the Dream Alive by Freheit, for ages I thought it was Paul McCartney.

Echo Beach was written by a band member of Martha and the Muffins. Toyah did a cover

I was very surprised that Heartbeats wasn't an original Jose Gonzales song. I really didn't like the original by The Knife after listening to it because a music journalist wrote that the original was better.

JojoM1981 · 20/04/2025 14:08

Boz Scaggs "Lido shuffle" I always thought was Elton John or Billy Joel.

I know, I just meant that I was convinced that Blondie sang it.

The song was deliberately done in the 'Elvis' style. It was much discussed at the time, I seem to remember. Elvis did actually do a cover version of it.

Oh right, sorry I misunderstood. It shares some very similar vibes to Blondie. Tide is High I'm thinking, although I'm I don't think they wrote that either 🤣

TY78910 · 21/04/2025 10:30

The 1 thing song, recently in an M&S ad - my whole life I was convinced that was Beyoncé.

Yes this!

All Night Long by Rainbow I was convinced for many years was by Kiss
I know Still of the Night is by Whitesnake but it sounds like a Led Zeppelin song

Edited

It always reminds me of Hanging on the Telephone.

TossieFleacake · 21/04/2025 12:12

Up until embarrassingly recently, I thought Rebel Rebel was the Rolling Stones, not in fact David Bowie ... despite a lifetime of seeing posters with Bowie's face and Rebel written around him.
It just sounds so Stonesy.

Littletinytarzanswingingfromanosehair · 24/04/2025 22:39

I actually agree with all the above.
When I was about 10ish, my dad was playing ACDC - shook me all night long....
I thought it was Slade.
