Coffee smells like cigarette smoke to me and it’s driving me nuts

Dh works from home and has a coffee machine in his office which is currently in the box room next door to our bedroom. He got it around a month ago and loves the bloody thing.

I hate coffee. It smells like cigarette smoke to me when done in a machine.

Currently laying in bed unable to sleep again due to the “cigarette” smell in the air from the bloody coffee. The machine is in his office as he’s often on long conference calls he can’t get away from, and he’s in there at odd hours due to international calls. It’s only a 1930s semi anyway so the smell would waft up from the kitchen if it was there.

Has anyone else who can’t stand the smell got any recommendations for coffee that doesn’t smell so bad?

(No, I’m not having a stroke, coffee always smells like cigarettes to me!)

In the grand scheme of things I think he/you can probably open a window when he brews it and find a nice candle to diffuse. It's just coffee.

It’s the lingering smell though. He last had one hours ago and to me it still stinks!

To me it smells very similar to poo, so I sympathise. I find it baffling that coffee is socially acceptable and smoking isn't 🤣 (although appreciate the two smell the same to you!)

I also hate the smell of coffee. I don't think it smells exactly like cigarettes but I get that they are similarly unpleasant. No idea how you get rid of the smell, sorry.

I don't drink coffee but I like the smell of it. For the past year though, I can smell cigarette smoke when I'm no where near anyone who is smoking. Happens at home or in the office at work, can't explain it. My eyes start to sting & well up. Really odd.

This gets me right at the back of the nose and throat.

Yep it’s horrible, smells like poo and smoke. Makes me feel queasy and anxious weirdly.

this is so interesting to me. For a while, back when I had post-Covid smell distortion issues, there was almost total overlap in how I experienced coffee, cigarette smoke, and poo smells.

Now my sense of smell is back to normal and they all smell very distinct from each other.

I guess there must be some olfactory compound they all share, and you’re all extra sensitive to it? Whereas I’m not normally, but for a while it was one of the only odours I could pick up.

I also can’t bear it.

I actually think it may be a major element in my probably remaining single for the rest of my life.

I don’t like coffee much. To me it smells like stale tobacco. And if I drink it - it tastes of ashtray.
I’d love to like coffee but I just can’t.

I used to think coffee smells like cigarette smoke when I was a child. I’d totally forgotten that! I like coffee now as an adult, I also like cigarettes, although I don’t smoke anymore.

This is really really interesting. I have an excellent sense of smell, to the point where its almost a problem when I can smell something but can't find the source 🤔

This is soooo weird! I love coffee but I sympathise - I cant stand tea, to me it smells like fish, and tastes like fish, too!

abracadabra1980 · 21/04/2025 22:01

I too hate the smell of coffee. I also can't stand 'coffee breath'. I cut hair in my younger years and I hated it. That and people who'd eaten garlic the night before.
