if you're working in a cafe and need a wee...

what do you do with your stuff?

Added complication that the Starbucks I'm in doesn't actually have a bathroom in the store, you need to leave and walk 3 minutes each way through the shopping centre.

Im dying for a wee but don't want to pack up everything just to have to come back...I probs will but curious as to what others do!

I live in Denmark which is secure enough to leave babies sleeping in prams whilst you go in a restaurant but probably wouldn't leave my computer 😂

Surely you pack up and take your stuff, unless you fancy having it stolen.

I thought you meant working in a cafe as in serving coffee and thought what a stupid question.

Lovelysummerdays · 16/04/2025 11:20

I take it all with me, my work has pretty strict rules about not leaving kit unattended in a public place. Even if it it had an in store toilet. I might leave a scarf / coat. I’ve written a note and left it on my coffee before to say off to toilet back in a minute.

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 16/04/2025 11:22

If the toilet is in the coffee shop then generally stuff is left on the table here, trust society and all...though I still struggle to leave the Londoner in me behind and do that! but with the toilet completely out of the store, I just cant!

I know Packing it all up Is sensible but to do it to go for a wee then come back and unpack it all again and potentially lose my coveted table with plug point irritates me 😂

I notice that men in a coffee shop I use often ask someone nearby to watch their stuff while they pop out. Not noticed any single women do it.

Take your laptop and money, phone etc. Leave a coat on something to keep your place.

Velmy · 16/04/2025 11:58

Would the store staff look after it for you? Wouldn't fly in the UK but maybe over there?

Scoobyblue · 16/04/2025 12:21

I was in a cafe two days ago in Soho London and the young woman sitting next to me asked me to watch her computer and bag while she went to the loo. I am a 57 year old slightly greying woman and was with my trainee doctor daughter in her scrubs so maybe we looked completely trustworthy?
It didn’t strike me as unusual and has happened to me a few times before. But then my family always take the piss out of me as old ladies literally search me out to get me to help them across the road….I must just look helpful….in my mind I’m a rebel but that just doesn’t translate to my appearance!

SeattleGraceMercyWest · 16/04/2025 14:17

I leave enough on the table to make clear I’m returning - eg glasses, coat, notebook. Then take laptop, purse and phone to the toilet. Sometimes I still flag to the staff that I’m just popping to the ladies

WonderingWanda · 16/04/2025 14:20

How long are you sat there working?

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 16/04/2025 15:36

Thanks all! In the end one of the staff members sat at the table opposite to do admin and happily kept an eye - the layout means there's the counter along one wall, an entrance each adjoining wall then the tables along the 4th so they're not that near and they can get quite busy so I wouldnt want to ask them to keep an eyed put that responsibility on them (I'm v regular and they're delightful staff so they wouldn't mind I'm sure but wouldn't want to)

I think I just need to stop pulling as much crao out my bag so I can swiftly pack it away 😂
