Went for a smear, now have “lump”

Just that really. Went for a smear this morning, supposed to be a quick pit stop before I took my son out for the day. Smear took forever and at the end the nurse said she’d found a “lump” that was a bit “unusual” and not like the usual cysts etc she’s seen. I’m quite a calm person, but have been a bit shaken by being asked to return to see the GP this afternoon- though the nurse said not to worry.

Anyway, going shortly and could just do with a handhold. I’ve had CIN2 before, which was successfully dealt with by LLETZ, and have since had 2 clear smears, so I’m sure it’s something and nothing, but I’m a single mum and can’t help but worry.

Son was also furious because I’ve been working like a dog all week and barely seen him- and we had to change plans because of this - and ofc couldn’t tell him why (he’s 8), except that the health check up mummy had this morning had a second part they’d forgotten to tell me about (had to tell him where I was as he’s being watched by friends for an hour, and no way to lie- besides which ofc I didn’t think I needed to this morning!)

just feeling a bit fed up, really.

That’s not to say if you’re in a couple you shouldn’t worry! I just mean, my mortality sometimes worries me in the context of being a single mum.

Handhold, OP. I hope you’re okay. I’d be worried too xx

When I went to my smear test last year the nurse said she saw ‘growths that she had never seen before all over my cervix’. I needed to see a doctor the next day and they wanted to take bloods where they kept asking me over and over again if I was sure I felt OK.

I was sent to colposcopy within 14 days where they told me they were they were natural follicles. My cervix was said to be beautifully healthy but for those two weeks I was scared to death.

Good luck!

Let us know how you get on. I hope the GP can offer you reassurance too.

I went for a smear and was told I had a polyp. I had no idea what that meant, so I worried silently until my hospital visit a few weeks later, where it was painlessly removed in about a minute. They showed me what it looked like, and it was just like a weird lump on my cervix.
That was it, all over and done with. I've also had abnormal smears in the past so my mind was going into overdrive. Try not to worry, hopefully it's something similar.

GP thinks just a cyst. They’re double checking it doesn’t need referral but seemed very positive it was nothing sinister. Such a relief! Thanks all!
