Is my baby a boy?

I’m 6 months pregnant and had an extra scan recently due to a low lying placenta.

It was only a brief scan in the consultant’s office to see if it was still low lying. She asked if we know the gender/we want to and we said no thanks we’d like a surprise. She said she’d cover that bit. I then asked whilst we were waiting if that means it’s quite obvious now and she said yes it’s very clear.

Do we think “very clear” means an obvious penis?! She didn’t say it with a knowing smile or anything she was quite matter of fact. But surely a girl wouldn’t be very clear to me and DP on scan?!

Obviously happy either way but now I can’t stop wondering which way it is Grin

Any thoughts?!

A girl would be equally clear, as the lack of penis would be an obvious giveaway!

I suppose so, I just thought maybe at 6 months maybe the penis could still be tucked away a bit and might not see straight away so if it’s a girl you just might not know you didn’t see it! I can’t stop wondering now Grin

With a girl they see a clear pair of labia

Both can be clear as day if the angle is right.

Overthebow · 06/04/2025 14:23

I’ve got a boy and a girl and both were very try easy to identify on the scans by 6 months (I had regular scans).

Boggartdreams · 06/04/2025 15:03

Thanks @Overthebow @LilacPony @PineConeOrDogPoo that’s helpful to know! We’d convinced ourselves it was a boy now so I guess we’ll have to continue being patient….argh! (If you can’t tell I’d probably prefer to find out though DP prefers not to!)

I would assume 'very clear' meant the angle/ position of the baby meant it was very clear to tell. Not very clear meaning there's a penis.

CherryBlossomPie · 06/04/2025 15:07

I love that you thought very clear = penis. If you do have a boy that story's going to come out again and again 😂. I wish you the very best OP.

Boggartdreams · 06/04/2025 15:08

In case anyone fancies guessing - my 20 week scan images though I don’t think you can see that low down since we didn’t want to know! I never know what I’m looking at with these anyway

You're welcome! Apparently the labia look a bit like a hamburger bun 😂

And 12 week scan for nub theory - not sure how that works

Well I thought that seemed logical?! Can you tell it’s my first Grin

No, she means at 16 weeks you can tell. At 20 weeks you can definitely tell. At 6 months you’re 99.9% sure.

NorthernGirl1981 · 06/04/2025 15:16

When I went for my 20 week scan, before we even started the sonographer asked if we wanted to know the sex, and we said no.

Unfortunately for her (and us) she had forgotten to turn the monitor around before she started the scan so me and DH could see the screen. As Sod’s Law would have it, when she put the device on my bump the baby must have been lying in the perfect position because the screen was instantly filled with a very obvious looking penis! There was absolutely no mistaking it 🤣

It’s very obvious when you see a penis, but it’s not so obvious when you see labia….to a lay person a female embryo’s genitalia could look like absolutely anything.

There’s no second guessing when it’s a penis so I agree with you OP, I would interpret the woman’s comments to mean you were having a boy.

Haha oh dear! No getting away from that…

Yeah I was thinking along the same lines I guess - when they show me heart, lungs, kidney etc tbh I have no idea what I’m looking at, so I probably wouldn’t quickly identify labia! But to the layman I assumed it would be easier to identify a penis there!

Funnily enough my neighbour was told she was having a girl and they got it completely wrong. She remembers them holding up the baby after birth and seeing something dangling down between thr legs and being confused 😂 (but not unhappy). This was 20 years ago but the scans were pretty good back then.

CurlewKate · 06/04/2025 15:38

I had a very late scan- 8 months- and was convinced I could see a penis. I realised why everyone in the room was laughing when dd was born!

Groundhogday2025 · 06/04/2025 15:47

My DD was very clearly a girl. You could see very clear white lines of the labia on the scan. I don’t think “obvious what the gender is”means a penis or an absence of one. Girl bits are very distinctive too!

ArghMyEars · 06/04/2025 20:50

I spent a lot of time researching the nub theory when I was pregnant after I had a similar-ish experience to you at a scan.

From your 12 weeks scan I would say girl. Please come back after birth and update this thread Grin

Interesting! I thought it was pointing too much up to be girl in 12 week scan! Though I was trying to be good and not look it up too much at the time Grin
