Italy in October - Inspire me

Hey,

We are looking to go to Italy in October but need inspiration of where to go.

Initially I fancied a relaxing trip near a lake. But my DD 8 has learnt all about Sorrento and is keen to go there. She is also fascinated by Pompeii.

So my wish list is:

• Somewhere a bit more rural/reasonably priced.
• Can day trip in to places
• Lovely scenery
• Would be me, DH and DD
• DD is not hugely active but loves to swim

Hit me with your hidden gems please wise ones!

I flew in to Naples then ferried over to Ischia for a few nights which was beautiful and reasonable prices - lots of Italians holiday there. Then stayed in Naples for a couple of nights and did a day trip to Pompeii and Sorrento via train. It was a great trip and nice mixture of city, beach and sight seeing.

Sorrento is your best bet for easy access to Pompeii and Herculaneum and also to explore the stunning Amalfi coast along with its islands such as Capri and Ischia. It will also still be nice and warm in October. It is not however rural as such and although you can swim in the mediterranean there isn't really a "proper" beach there. There are beaches along that coast but you'd have to get the train/bus to reach them. Sorrento has excellent transport links so not terribly difficult. You could consider the Cilento region which is very rural and reminds me a little of Cornwall. It has lovely sandy beaches and you can get the train from there to Pompeii. If your daughter is fascinated by the archeological sites I would certainly encourage it, it really is a mind blowing experience.
