We had new tyres scheduled for today but it hasn’t gone to plan. The locking wheel nut has snapped off on the removal key on the first wheel. It’s now like this.

Now our wheel nut key has the broken part lodged inside so no other tyres could be changed. I also don’t have a code to get the nut key replaced and have no idea how we’ll sort this wheel with the broken locking nut.

Really grateful for any advice as I’m not great with cars and no garages around here are open today.

Possibly a tyre place may be able to drill the lock out but you won't be able to remove the other wheels until you speak to a garage/dealer who may be able to get you a new locking set or the correct key for the other wheels and a replacement for the drilled one. Google wheel locking nut removal you will get some options. Good news is this will be solvable. Won't be an unusual occurrence just inconvenient.

Thank you! Yes so inconvenient. 🙈🙈 There are a lot of locking wheel nuts online, some of which are claimed to be the right one for our car, but I don’t want to waste money and then it arrives and it’s the wrong thing. I will hold off and speak to the garage I think.

My key "disappeared" from the place in the van where it had always lived at the last MOT 🙄. The garage drilled all the locking nuts out and replaced them with normal ones- I think it cost £80.

Do you live in a high crime area? If not, I wouldn't bother with having the locking nuts replaced. It's my understanding that nicking wheels is a thing of yesteryear, like siphoning fuel, but I'm willing to be corrected on that.

Actually, come to think of it I don't think they drilled them out- they welded another nut to the top of them, allowing them to be unscrewed. Very clever!

As per PP you would be better to get non lockers going forward. You could find that if you get another locking wheel nut it might break when you try to take off the next wheel. Get the wheels taken off at a tyre place or garage and get non locking wheel nuts put on.

Ah.. I had an issue recently and the lock key was misplaced by the company changing a tyre. I then needed a tyre changed on the MOT and they took off all the locking nuts for standard ones - cost me dearly 🙈 but solved the problem.
