Anyone know if Lamb is likely to be half price this Easter?

I’m hosting a crowd and desperately hoping it is! Just over three weeks to Easter and haven’t heard anywhere doing this yet though…

Why would it be? Easter is the prime time to buy lamb, and farmers need to earn every penny they can get.

GivingUpFinally · 27/03/2025 09:54

Sometimes it is. Think it's usually half price leading up and around Christmas. I also stock up on massive legs then and use one of those for Easter.

JasmineAllen · 27/03/2025 10:16

I really hope so. Last Easter's Sainsbury had a great 50% off offer on leg of lamb and we bought a couple for the freezer. I'm ready and waiting 😁

From memory the offer appeared closer to the Easter weekend.

Tesco usually do it near Easter

BruhWhy · 27/03/2025 10:20

Asda usually do. I bought 5 last year to use throughout the year!

QuirkInTheMatrix · 27/03/2025 10:25

It’s normally half price in Tesco for a leg.

Because it nearly always is.

Because it always is, at Easter and Christmas, along with other joints? The only reason I’m querying it is because it’s usually started or at least been advertised around now…

More like double the price if they can get away with it.

BatchCookBabe · 27/03/2025 10:35

I don't have a crystal ball @JackShephard so I can't help you.

I do this too! We love lamb but can’t justify full price nearly £30 for a leg. I usually buy one to eat, two for the freezer (can’t fit more than two) so I suppose I could buy one full price really but… I probably wouldn’t!

Why would it be? Easter is the prime time to buy lamb, and farmers need to earn every penny they can get.

Usually what happens is the supermarkets use frozen imported lamb for their headline promotions, which impacts on the proce of fresh lamb as well, screwing over farmers in the process, to attract shoppers. The supermarkets are happy becuase they know that when people go in to buy the 'cheap' lamb (in reality only saving a consumer £10/15/£20) they will also spend £150 ~ £200 on other food, chocolate, wine and whatever, on which they will make £50/£75 of gross profit. Meanwhile the farmer subsidises the supermarket's marketing activity.

BlushingBrightly · 27/03/2025 10:39

£30 on a joint to feed 'a crowd' on a special occasion doesn't seem that unreasonable

Darkclothes · 27/03/2025 10:45

Yes, most supermarkets do have discounts just prior to Easter. From memory, Sainsburys was £6.50kg last year and asda was £6.95kg. Aldi also had them cheaper, but my local store had sold out before I got there.

Has been the last few years

JackShephard · 27/03/2025 10:51

Ok thanks - just wondered if anyone had any inside info or if I’d missed any adverts but doesn’t look like it.

Personally I’m not willing to pay full price for lamb so if it’s not on offer I will get a couple of free range chickens, or a pork joint, or maybe one chicken one ham - we shall see. I would prefer lamb if it’s a good price though which is why I asked…

Easter is later this year, so the maybe the promotions are later too.

RedBrickArc · 27/03/2025 11:07

It’s 50% at Waitrose and 30% at Sainsbury’s with Nectar

Darkclothes · 27/03/2025 11:34

Another option OP is a whole duck (if you like it?). I'm pretty sure duck and lamb are usually on sale pre-Easter.

Snorlaxo · 27/03/2025 11:36

Easter is later than last year which is why there may be no offers yet but I would expect some closer to the time.

Oh did you see that in store at Waitrose? Their website shows full price (but half price venison and beef).

Yes I think it’s for Mothers Day

Lambs born this year won't be sold for Easter, they would have been sold around September time last year.
Farmers have already been paid. A pittance.

(best friends with farmer and lamber for 25 years).

Whenwillthewashingend · 02/04/2025 10:50

@JackShephard If you haven’t managed to get any, Aldi are selling legs for £8:99 a kilo. I managed to get one this morning.

Darkclothes · 02/04/2025 10:53

Sainsburys have them for £7.85/kg with a nectar card.

I'm sure last year they were £6.95/kg there, so I'm unsure if they will go down further before Easter?
